The UNSC Marine Corps is a branch of the United Nations Space Command responsible for conducting land-based expeditionary amphibious and airborne combat operations, using the mobility provided by the UNSC Navy to rapidly deliver forces. Marines are also charged with the defense of Navy vessels and installations from hostile forces.[7] The branch is one of the two senior services in the UNSC (alongside the UNSC Navy), formed in 2163 during the Interplanetary War from the constituent nations of the United Nations on Earth.[2] Since then, they have fought in nearly every single major conflict the UNSC has been embroiled in including the Insurrection, the Human-Covenant War, the postwar conflicts, and the Created uprising.

The Marine Corps' counterpart within the Colonial Military Authority (CMA) are the CMA Marine Corps.

Mission and roles[edit]

The official mission of the UNSC Marine Corps is to maintain an expeditionary warfare force capable of deploying alongside the UNSC Navy for operations in deep space.[8] The Marine Corps' collateral functions include;

  • Enforcement of emergency military law in designated crisis areas.[8]
  • Development of doctrine, procedures and equipment that are of common interest to the Army and Navy.[8]
  • Furnishing security teams for the protection of UNSC property and high-value personnel.[8]
  • Deployment of security detachments and organizations for service on Navy ships.[8]
  • Development of doctrine, tactics, techniques and equipment for the rapid deployment and utilization of interstellar combat power.[8]

A small detachment of Marines can generally be found aboard most UNSC starships, with Marines assigned to guard a given vessel's bridge and nuclear weapons storage, and responsible for implementing the Cole Protocol and other security procedures in the event of a ship's
