The planet.

This unidentified planet, commonly dubbed as the "Legendary planet", is a mysterious Forerunner[1] Shield World located in the Milky Way galaxy.[2] The aft section of the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn, containing John-117 and Cortana, is seen drifting in the Legendary ending of Halo 3; seconds later, a light shines across the surface of the planet, as the Forward Unto Dawn is caught by the planet's gravity. The Legendary planet also appears in a small image in the Halo Encyclopedia, where it is shown to have a reddish-orange color on a small illuminated section.[3] The planet appears again in the Halo 4 Announcement Trailer, where the aft half of the Forward Unto Dawn is seen being pulled into a massive, iris-like opening on its surface.[4][5]

Background

This as-yet unidentified Shield World has an external surface covered with lights, geometric symbols, and other constructions demonstrating that the entire outer surface is a composed of complex Forerunner machinery. One notable feature of the Shield World's surface are massive demonstrations of two frequent Forerunner symbols; the one representing Reclaimers, and a shape that consists of a set of elongated, irregular rectangles surrounded by a circular, radial formation. This latter shape has appeared in numerous locations, including Installation 04 and 05, alongside Installation 00, the Ark.

Another important feature of this construct is that it harbors at least one circular entrance portal, with an iris-type opening mechanism. When opened, a vibrant, blue-white light can be seen emanating from the interior. Around this portal, which had been drawing in the wreckage of the Forward Unto Dawn, innumerable layers of complex Forerunner machinery are visible, indicative of an encompassing superstructure of undefined thickness. The interior of the installation has not yet been witnessed, so it is unknown if it shares a similar environment to other Shield Worlds, such as Shield 0459.

Though its full nature and contents have not yet been documented, it is known that the structure contains, or is related to, an as-yet unspecified being, set of beings, or forces that are a significant threat to life forms currently living in the Milky Way galaxy.

Trivia

An image of the planet is present in the bulletin board of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, in a poster for a fictional film titled Dark Planetoid Rising.
