"The Monitor's Encephalon has served its purpose! The Reformation has begun. Nothing can stop it."

Despondent Pyre's encephalon

An encephalon[1] is a piece of Forerunner technology and a vital component of a Monitor. It contains, among other things, the routines needed to summon a Halo Ring's Reformation Spires. Like an activation index, an encephalon can be stored in digital format.[2]

History[edit]

On May 28, 2560, the Harbinger, who desired to restore Zeta Halo's Silent Auditorium, forcibly extracted Despondent Pyre's encephalon. She subsequently used the encephalon to summon the Spires needed to carry out the Reformation.[3] Joyeuse later stole the encephalon from the Harbinger and used it to shut down all the Reformation Spires.[2][1] With it in her possession, Joyeuse was technically in charge of Zeta Halo.[4]

On June 4, the encephalon enabled Joyeuse to order two Aggressor Sentinels to do her and the Master Chief's bidding.[4]

On June 6, Joy used the encephalon to access the vast array of administrative and historical data that spanned Zeta Halo's existence to determine that she and the Master Chief needed to take Lucas Browning to Lifeworker Central.[5]

On June 7, as Joyeuse accessed the Lifeworker Archive, a malevolent ancient presence stole the encephalon from her, warning the AI that her meddling was over. Joyeuse told the Master Chief that it was too powerful to be a submonitor and the presence was more consuming, malignant and dominating. Without the encephalon, Joyeuse lost the level of access she once had to Zeta Halo's systems.[6]

After retrieving the Harbinger's body from the Silent Auditorium,[7] Jega 'Rdomnai searched it for the encephalon with no luck. Huragok Rises High told the Banished Blademaster that logs showed that the encephalon was once in the Harbinger's possession before Joyeuse took it.[8]

Trivia[edit]

Encephalon is another word for brain.
