Naomi-010, born Naomi Sentzke, is a Spartan-II supersoldier. In January 2553, she was assigned to Kilo-Five, a highly covert intelligence unit under the command of Captain Serin Osman.[5] Naomi is the daughter of Staffan Sentzke, who became an insurgent and terrorist after her disappearance.[6]

Biography

Early childhood

Born September 15, 2511 on the colony of Sansar, Naomi was the only child of Staffan and Lena Sentzke,[6] both of whom were of Swedish descent. In September 10, 2517, five days before her sixth birthday, Naomi was abducted by ONI Retrieval team Theta 2 and conscripted into the SPARTAN-II program. During the retrieval process, she temporarily escaped her captors but was eventually caught. As she failed to return home in time, her family began an extensive search operation within their hometown of Alstad and the neighboring villages before a hospital in the nearby New Stockholm announced she had been found. Unknown to her family, however, this was actually a flash clone replacement.[7] Like the other Spartan candidates, Naomi was taken to the UNSC fortress world of Reach, and for years trained under Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez and the AI Déjà. By the age of ten, John-117 had considered her a master armorer due to her uncanny ability refine and improve virtually every weapon that the trainees used.[8] In 2525, she survived the subsequent augmentation procedures.

Naomi's flash clone died after one and a half years. Her devastated mother came to believe that her "daughter's" death was the result of a hereditary genetic defect, and decided to undergo sterilization; she committed suicide six months later. Correctly deducing that the clone wasn't his real daughter, and that her disappearance was the result of a government conspiracy, her father developed a deep hatred for the UNSC and later became an Insurrectionist leader on Venezia.[9]

Chi Ceti IV

Main article: Battle of Chi Ceti

Months after the Human-Covenant War began with the alien empire's attack on Harvest in early 2525, Naomi-010 and the other Spartan-IIs were brought to the Reach FLEETCOM Military Complex, where Rear Admiral Michael Stanforth briefed them on the new Covenant threat. In response, the training of the Spartan-IIs was accelerated, and in November 2525 they were sent to Chi Ceti IV to receive their new MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor from the Damascus Materials Testing Facility.[10] While en route to Chi Ceti IV aboard the UNSC Commonwealth, they were attacked by the Unrelenting, a Covenant warship.[11] The Commonwealth was able to ward off the Unrelenting and the Spartans were deployed to Chi Ceti IV with Halsey, where they each received a set of armor.[12] While the Spartans were returning to the Commonwealth via Pelican dropship, the Unrelenting re-engaged the frigate. To save the Commonwealth, John had Naomi and the other Spartan-IIs use thruster packs in an attempt to board the alien vessel, and destroy it with Anvil-II AS missiles. However, only John-117, Kelly-087, and Samuel-034 made it aboard. Naomi and the others missed the Unrelenting, but were picked up after the battle.[13]

Netherop

Main article: Skirmish over Netherop

By early 2526, Naomi had been assigned to Gold Team, which was then led by Joshua-029. On March 5 of that year, Naomi, her team, and eight other Spartans were organized into an assault squad led by John-117 with orders to board and capture a Covenant frigate, Radiant Arrow, orbiting the planet Netherop. To accomplish this, they were deployed from the prowler UNSC Starry Night for an EVA boarding action.[14] Using a flight of Type-27 Banshees for cover, the Spartans stealthily approached the alien vessel.[15] They boarded the frigate via its underslung hangar and eliminated the Covenant forces stationed there without the rest of crew realizing they had been boarded. As Blue and Green Teams pushed further into the alien vessel, John instructed Gold Team to collect weapons and corpses to pile into the Banshees, which would be pushed into space for ONI to recover and study. Once that task was completed, Naomi and her teammates acted as support for Blue and Green, watching their backs. As the two forward teams continued on, a sensor operator aboard one of the prowlers "accidentally" broadcast a transmission on the Spartans' SQUADCOM, revealing their presence to the frigate's crew. Unbeknownst to them, the crewman's apparent mistake was part of an insurrectionist plot designed by Hector Nyeto, who intended to get the Spartans killed. With their presence known, Blue and Green Teams split up, with John leading his team to the bridge. Meanwhile, Gold Team was caught in a prolonged firefight with some of the crew. When they had begun to run out of ammo for their own weapons, Naomi was able to quickly figure out how to operate the carbines dropped by their adversaries. Back on the bridge, John was unable to prevent the frigate's shipmaster from activating a self-destruct sequence, forcing him to order all of his teammates to abandon ship immediately. All of the Spartans—including Naomi—made it to safety before the Radiant Arrow detonated.[8]

SILENT STORM

Main article: Operation: SILENT STORM

On March 8, 2526, Naomi, Gold Team, and the other Spartans that had participated in the pervious mission were given a new assignment as part of Operation: SILENT STORM. They and the UNSC Marine Corps' 21st Space Assault Battalion would board and destroy Covenant vessels and stations in an attempt to slow their destructive advance through humanity's Outer Colonies. For the duration of this mission, the Spartans would be assigned to Task Force Yama, a small fleet of prowlers that would serve as both transport and support. As a Covenant fleet was currently glassing the colony of Etalan, the nearby world of Biko was chosen as the theater for the task force to launch its first attack. Specifically, an abandoned ice quarry on its third moon of Seoba was selected to house the prowlers until the moment presented itself.[16]

During the voyage through slipspace, Naomi and the others trained with the ODSTs in the UNSC Vanishing Point's mission preparation hold. The Spartans made short work of the veteran marines in each exercise until Staff Sergeant Avery Johnson taught them some unorthodox strategies that proved to be much more effective against the supersoldiers. After four days of training, Colonel Marmon Crowther had them all gather in the ship's drop hangar to be briefed on the specifics of the operation. Despite their exemplary performance against his ODSTs, Crowther was still skeptical about deploying the Spartans to the front lines due to their inexperience on the battlefield, as well as their apparent young age, much to their frustration. Naomi's squadmate, Daisy-023, was particularly vocal in her dissatisfaction.[16]

Seoba

Main article: Battle of Seoba

Upon the task force's arrival at Seoba on March 18, 2526, Colonel Crowther planned to practice the mass deployment of the Spartans and ODSTs into the ice quarry, in an exercise dubbed Operation: ICE DANCE. However, entrenched insurrectionist forces were detected in the quarry, and they were preparing to stage a coup against Biko's chancellor. Crowther decided that ICE DANCE would proceed as planned, but now with the objective of taking the quarry from the rebels.[17] An intense battle ensued, with the Spartans leading the way. Blue Team focused on destroying a convoy of Civets moving to repair the rebels' damaged communications relay as the other Spartans—including Naomi and Gold Team—were engaged elsewhere.[18] Ultimately, the insurgents were soon defeated and the quarry fell under UNSC control.[19]

The next day, Captain Halima Ascot, commander of Task Force Yama and captain of the Starry Night, held a meeting to discuss the events of the previous day's battle. John was reprimanded for his maverick actions at the start of the battle, and his Spartans' experience was called into question once more. Due to some of Nyeto's sly comments, the truth about their young ages was revealed to the few personnel present at the meeting. Learning this disturbing fact, Colonel Crowther refused to send the Spartans into battle again, instead ordering them to guard the insurrectionists captured during the fighting and prepare them to be sent to Biko to be processed. While this meeting was being held, a Covenant flotilla was detected as it arrived in-system and began heading for Seoba.[20] As the rest of Task Force Yama mobilized to meet the alien vessels, Naomi and the other Spartans were sent to Subsurface Maintenance Grotto 6M430 where they would direct the captured insurgents onto a transport. While the line of roughly 300 prisoners marched onto the vessel, John noticed that a group of them were hiding the presence of an officer, General Harper Garvin of the United Rebel Front. He ordered the officer to step forward, but another rebel presented herself instead, clearly trying to stall for Garvin. To show that he meant business, John grabbed the woman by her tunic lapels and threatened her with summary execution for interfering with a guard while on the field of combat, as per the UNSC Military Code of Conduct. John's plan worked and General Garvin presented himself. He began trying to pry information out of John, but this effort was interrupted when a situation with Captain Ascot's flagship was relayed over the task force's command channel. The Starry Night had been shot down on takeoff, crash-landing back into the quarry. Crowther was unable to send a unit of his Black Daggers to search for survivors without putting more prowlers at risk. Since they were the only unit available to assist, John decided that he and his Spartans would go for the Starry Night once the transport was loaded. After sending Garvin back to his people and ordering the transport pilot to launch, John had his Spartans move out, much to the concern of Joshua-029 and Kurt-051. Not only would they be disobeying a direct order from Crowther, operating without the support of the task force in such a situation would be very risky.[21]

Post-war

Naomi-010 survived the Human-Covenant War. In 2553, She was selected by Admiral Margaret Parangosky to serve under Captain Serin Osman as part of a black operations team designated Kilo-Five. The team, comprised of pilot Sergeant Lian Devereaux, Dr. Evan Phillips, Corporal Vasily Beloi, Staff Sergeant Malcolm Geffen and the AI Black-Box, were sent on a top-secret mission to sow discord between different Sangheili factions through arming the dissident faction known as the Servants of the Abiding Truth. During this mission, she was equipped with a suit of newly developed Mark VII Mjolnir armor.[22]

Naomi and other members of Kilo-Five.

During her time aboard the prowler UNSC Port Stanley, having not quite able to place where she had recognized Captain Osman's face, later directly asked Osman about it, to which Osman divulged that she was, in fact, Serin-019, who Naomi and the other Spartans thought had died during the augmentation process.[23] Naomi primarily stayed back on the first three missions enacted by Kilo-Five, the delivery of tagged weaponry to Avu Med 'Telcam, the extraction of Mike Spenser on Reynes, and the attempted rescue of the UNSC Ariadne above Venezia.[24]

In February of 2553, during one of Kilo-Five's exchanges with 'Telcam on New Llanelli, Naomi spotted a Sangheili eavesdropper named Jul 'Mdama. Using her profound strength, she subdued 'Mdama and had him incarcerated onboard Port Stanley.[25] Not long after, ONI had established communications with the human survivors inside Trevelyan: Dr. Catherine Halsey, SCPO Franklin Mendez and Spartan Blue Team. Admiral Parangosky ordered Kilo-Five to arrest Halsey. Kilo-Five entered the shield world via dropship and detained Halsey, taking her and the other survivors aboard Port Stanley. Jul 'Mdama was later placed in captivity on Trevelyan after ONI had established a local research facility.[26]

On March 3, 2553 Naomi along with the rest of Kilo-Five and Blue Team attended the Voi Memorial ceremony to honor the soldiers of the UNSC who gave their lives during the 28-year Human-Covenant War and marked the end of the war, with a small section devoted to John-117 who, in accordance with ONI policy, was listed as missing in action.[27]

Mission on Sanghelios

Arriving at Sanghelios during 'Telcam's assault on Vadam, Kilo-Five searched for Phillips in the Temple of the Abiding Truth. They encountered several Jiralhanae insurgents attacking the temple, but Naomi quickly eliminated them. They were initially refused entry into the temple by Olar because they were non-believers. As BB negotiated with him, a nearby Sangheili crowd became aggravated by their presence. Olar relented and allowed Kilo-Five inside the temple. After they realized that Phillips was no longer inside, they evacuated as the Sangheili mob stormed the area.[28]

BB eventually located Phillips through an intercepted communication and they quickly traveled to Nes'alun Keep in Acroli to evacuate him.[29] They extracted Phillips in the midst of a skirmish at the keep. During their evacuation, their Pelican Tart-Cart was damaged by a Banshee, forcing Devereaux to put her down for repairs. They were followed by a Phantom piloted by Forze 'Mdama, who had been sent by 'Telcam to recover Phillips for them. After being instructed to help them with repairs, Forze handed over some pipes and wire and left. While Devereaux was working on the ship, Naomi stood guard. Devereaux was then able to get Tart-Cart off the ground and return to the UNSC Infinity for proper repairs.[30]

On their flight back to Port Stanley a fire erupted and they had to re-route to the Infinity. There, they witnessed Infinity in action as it helped the Arbiter by destroying many of the Abiding Truth's vessels.[31] Parangosky then ordered them to extract their informant 'Telcam from the ground. As Kilo-Five abducted 'Telcam from the battle, Port Stanley posed as a Kig-Yar pirate ship and destroyed a few of 'Vadam's ships in order to maintain the stalemate between the two factions.[32] They dropped 'Telcam off on New Llanelli and were later retrieved by Port Stanley.

Venezian movement

Following the "Thursday war" at Sanghelios, Kilo-Five quickly resumed its previous task and returned to Venezia. With Spencer's help, Naomi and Vaz went undercover as UNSC deserters and investigated Venezia's black markets. During their investigation of Insurrectionist activity on the planet, they spotted Staffan Sentzke in company with the T'vaoan Sav Fel, the possessor of the battlecruiser Pious Inquisitor which Kilo-Five had been tasked with finding and acquiring.[33] Shortly thereafter, Naomi was pulled out and substituted by Mal as her family ties might compromise the mission.[34]

While Mal and Vaz infiltrated the Venezian militia, Naomi accompanied Phillips and Devereaux to New Llanelli for another meeting with 'Telcam.[35] Afterward, Naomi and Devereaux traveled to Anchor 10 with the Pelican Tart-Cart to retrieve a new dropship to Kilo-Five, having it immediately upgraded with the same capabilities as Tart-Cart by the Huragok Requires Adjustment.[36] During the trip, however, Mal and Vaz were captured by the Insurrectionists on Venezia and Naomi and Devereaux were immediately tasked with the rescue mission. Naomi piloted the new Pelican, dubbed Bogof, to extract Mal, while Devereaux went after Vaz with Tart-Cart. Landing her dropship near Stuttgart armory, Naomi crashed through the roof of the building where Geffen was being held, instantly neutralizing the insurgent guarding him. Carrying Mal, she flew back to Bogof using her jetpack.[37]

Reunion

Both having succeeded in their respective extractions, Naomi and Devereaux returned to Port Stanley, with Naomi's father taken captive aboard Devereaux's Pelican. Soon after, Staffan Sentzke was informed about the Spartan program and was allowed by Osman to reunite with his daughter. Staffan was dumbfounded about meeting the daughter he had sought after for so long, particularly after learning what had truly happened to her. In the ensuing exchanges between the two, Staffan asked Naomi to give up her service with the UNSC in favor of a normal family life.[38] Although she found the prospect virtually unprecedented, Naomi feared her judgement would be clouded by her Spartan indoctrination. Having forgotten about her life prior to the SPARTAN-II program almost entirely, Naomi asked Black-Box to use data recorded by ONI while connected through her neural implant to trigger some of her childhood memories. Even though she became highly upset upon viewing the recordings of the early days of the Spartan program, this did not change her decision to stay with the UNSC.[39]

Pious Inquisitor

Main article: Skirmish on Pious Inquisitor

Meanwhile, Kilo-Five managed to track down Pious Inquisitor, which had been boarded by a Kig-Yar pirate crew attempting to commandeer the ship for themselves.[40] Naomi and Mal boarded the ship as Kilo-Five's second boarding party, moving toward the bridge and eliminating members of the Kig-Yar crew on the way. The humans' advance soon prompted the Shipmistress, Chol Von, to set the ship to explode.[41] Naomi and Mal escaped to Bogof; Staffan Sentzke, having fled the ship aboard a Spirit dropship and intending to escape his ONI captors, stayed in range until he could ensure Naomi was safe. While Kilo-Five made it aboard Port Stanley, Sentzke was presumed dead when Pious Inquisitor self-destructed.[42]

With the Venezian threat seemingly neutralized, Kilo-Five was granted shore leave. While the rest of the team headed planetside on Cascade, Naomi chose to remain aboard Port Stanley and watch over the Huragok Adj and Leaks.[43] After the rest of the team returned onboard, Vaz received an anonymous package containing a planetarium lamp and a chair for a dolls' house — both of which Staffan had planned to give Naomi for her sixth birthday decades earlier — indicating he was still alive.[44]

As of 2558, Naomi is still enlisted and serving with the UNSC. However, the details of her current deployment remain classified.[45]

Personality and traits

Naomi wearing her Mark VII suit in March 2553.

Like most Spartans, Naomi is very calm and generally stoic. She is very curious, a trait she has retained from her childhood. She was interested in astronomy[46] and wanted to know more about her father, Staffan Sentzke, after learning that he is an Insurrectionist. Consistent with the exceedingly high qualifications required of a SPARTAN-II, she was regarded as a gifted child and demonstrated exceptional intelligence. This was also noted by a CAA educational psychologist who had visited her school to perform tests on the children.[47] She is noted by John-117 as having an exceptional ability to comprehend unfamiliar weapons and armor, and their functionality, even saying that she was the first spartan to understand the functionality of the Covenant's carbines and their own armor's reactive circuits.[8]

When talking about her thoughts of her past, mainly about her father, with other members of Kilo-Five she tends to snap back to being abrasive rather than somewhat friendly. Most of the time she is not this way and is her usual, quiet self unless she manages to joke with her team, but she quickly corrects herself and is back to being hardened and quiet again.

Equipment

Naomi is the only Spartan known to have been issued the Mark VII Mjolnir armor. Her suit closely resembles the Mark V [B], which may be a stylistic choice on her part. It sports a purplish-blue color scheme and a reflective orange visor.[48]

Trivia

The cover art of both Halo: The Thursday War and Halo: Mortal Dictata depict Naomi's visor as bluish-silver, though the latter describes it as reflective orange. Furthermore, Mortal Dictata's cover art shows Naomi's helmet as gray rather than blue, as well as being the Mark V[B] variant as opposed to the Mark V variant.
