Notes[edit]
- ^ a b c d e f g It is not always clear when a navy officer actually holds the rank of Captain (upper case), or is only acting in the position of a ship captain (otherwise referred to as the "commanding officer"). This is especially true for smaller ships like frigates and corvettes, though it is certainly not impossible for an Captain to receive such a command, particularly as a punishment (such as the case of Terrence Hood after his mistake at Arcadia). For captains of such ships where the text utilizes upper case "Captain" with no further indication of being another rank, they will be included on the list.
