Winter Update was an interim season, later redefined as an operation for Halo Infinite, which debuted on November 8, 2022, and ended on March 7, 2023 with the release of Season 03: Echoes Within.[1][2]

As an interim season, the Winter Update featured a large amount of content for both campaign and multiplayer, seeing the launch of campaign cooperative play, Forge, and the return of the "customs browser" from Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo 5: Guardians. Like Season 01: Heroes of Reach and Season 02: Lone Wolves, it would also feature a myriad of customization elements for players to unlock, this time through a uniquely free battle pass; additional content would be available through a trio of events over the course of the update's run.

The Winter Update is also known as "Season 2001" internally as it fell under Season 02's banner, and is considered an event or operation within the game's API. The Winter Update would be properly reclassified as an operation with Season 05: Reckoning, with subsequent operations in Season 05 through to Infinite following suit and falling under the banners of Season 5001 through to Season 13001 respectively.
