The energy disruptor is a specialised support grenade developed by the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) for use by United Nations Space Command (UNSC) military forces. It was designed based on scavenged and reverse-engineered Covenant technology, and is used to generate a bright flash and an electromagnetic pulse that disables standard electronics alongside the plasma weaponry, shield gauntlets and energy shielding of Covenant forces. The grenade has a short range and is seemingly blocked by walls, requiring it to be thrown directly into a room to affect the electronics inside it. This can be used by operators to ensure that its effects do not affect them.[1]
Operational history[edit]
Three[2] energy disruptors were issued to Jonah-B283 for his covert mission to the Covenant-held moon Rangiren in the later years of the Human-Covenant War. Jonah noted his unease at using the same technology as that developed by his enemy, though appreciated the irony.[1]
During the operation he used the disruptor alongside a pair of flashbangs to disorient a group of Covenant infantry inside a barracks, allowing him to kill them with ease.[1] He used a second disruptor after being ambushed by several Silent Shadow Sangheili troops, with the weapon's effect freezing Jega 'Rdomnai[3] and three other Sangheili in place while Jonah was captured by two who were out of range of its effect.[4] When Jonah taunted the Sangheili with the disruptor, 'Rdomnai recognised it and the Covenant technology it had been derived from, though was unable to do anything about it and remained frozen.[3]
While being tortured, Jonah activated an explosive charge that had been set prior by Roland-B210, detonating explosives placed throughout the Covenant compound and killing the Elites who had been frozen in place by the blast.[4] The disruptor affecting 'Rdomnai wore off just as the blast consumed him, leaving the warrior heavily injured, where he would ultimately be recovered and inducted into the Banished.[3]
Production notes[edit]
The energy disruptor's observed properties are extremely similar to the Covenant's power drain equipment, as shown in Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. It may be that these were the Covenant technology mentioned as having been reverse-engineered for the energy disruptor.[1]
The energy disruptor is also extremely similar to the stun grenades found in Halo: Spartan Strike. It is unknown if the two are one and the same, with the stun grenade possibly representing a more standardised production model of the prototype used by Jonah in Headhunters.
