Distress call
From Halopedia, the Halo wiki
- "Mayday, mayday, mayday. This is UNSC FFG-201 Forward Unto Dawn, requesting immediate evac. Survivors aboard. Prioritization code: Victor Zero Five dash Three dash Sierra Zero One One Seven."
- — Cortana's automated distress call.[1]
A distress call or a distress signal is a message calling for help.
History[edit]
When Operation: BLOWBACK went awry, Team Black used a slipbeacon to send a distress signal to FLEETCOM.[2]
During the Battle of Installation 04, Bravo 022 broadcast a distress call while being attacked near the Cartographer. Responding to the distress call, the Master Chief and Cortana found the dropship crashed and the crew dead.[3] The two later responded to a distress call from Fireteam Zulu.[4] During the Outbreak at the Containment Facility, Corporal Lovik broadcast a distress call as he was attacked by the Flood.[5] After the Flood outbreak, a shell-shocked Marine from the 79th Infantry Battalion sent a high-priority distress call through Lima Foxtrot Alpha 19's transmitter. The transmission was later retrieved by the Office of Naval Intelligence, and was analyzed as a part of the ongoing investigation of the Flood threat.[6]
When the UNSC Forward Unto Dawn got stranded in space following the Battle of Installation 00 in 2552, Cortana dropped a distress beacon with a repeating looping distress call. However, she warned John-117 that it could be years before they were found.[7] In 2557, the UNSC Infinity picked up the distress call[8] and later arrived at Requiem which the Forward Unto Dawn had been pulled into.[9]
After the Infinity was also pulled inside of the shield world, Captain Andrew Del Rio broadcast a distress call which the Master Chief picked up as the ship flew overhead.[10] While the Master Chief went to help the ship, he picked up a separate distress call from Commander Thomas Lasky calling for help after his forces became surrounded by enemies.[11]
During the Requiem Campaign, Fireteam Crimson responded to distress calls from the Cauldron[12][13], Galileo Base,[14][15] and Mountain Squad.[16] When the Infinity was attacked by Covenant and Promethean forces, the ship broadcast a distress call ordering all Spartan fireteams to return to the ship to help.[17]
As part of a plot to kill Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood, insurrectionist Daniel Clayton and mercenary Vata 'Gajat launched the Pilgrims' Pride from Oth Lodon in March 2558, a gas giant in the middle of Jiralhanae territory.[18] On March 11, a distress signal broadcasted on an old maritime channel was picked up by the Infinity. The signal was found to be originating from the Pilgrims' Pride near the Artesia-702 system and Chaudier trade route. When Infinity arrived in the system, it found the damaged freighter leaking atomic matter with faint life signs aboard. Infinity tugged the ship into one of its deployment bays. An ambush was sprung within the bay when the freighter set itself to self-destruct and multiple UNSC aircraft exited its cargo bay. Fireteam Majestic was deployed along with Fireteams Colossus and Fenrir to repel the attack and prevent the freighter from self-destructing inside the Infinity.[19]
On October 28, 2558, the Infinity picked up distress calls on all channels during the Subjugation of Earth.[20] At least a day after the Created began to subjugate Earth, the UNSC Sentry of El Morro was attacked by the Warden Eternal. The Sentry of El Morro broadcast a distress call, which was received and answered by Roland, the shipboard AI of the Infinity, who said that the Infinity was on its way to help. Admiral Serin Osman and Fleet Admiral Terrence Hood also intercepted these transmissions via slipstream space probes launched from their position on Rossbach's World.[21]
Upon arriving at Installation 00 in 2559, the UNSC Spirit of Fire picked up and investigated a distress call from the Henry Lamb Research Outpost.[22] Captain James Cutter and Isabel formulated a plan to deploy Installation 09 to the Soell system, Installation 04's former site, where it could be used to raise a distress beacon to the UNSC.[23] After succeeding in destroying the Banished flagship, Professor Ellen Anders went to the Foundry and activated the installation, prompting Atriox to order all available units to take the ring from the UNSC. While the Banished contested the UNSC for control of the new Halo, the humans gained a foothold, allowing Anders to enter the control room where she successfully disarmed the ring's firing mechanism and manipulated its gravity anchors to eject a section of the Halo's landmass housing Banished forces into space. Although the UNSC forces evacuated to their ship, Anders could not make it out of the control room in time before Installation 09 entered a slipspace portal to the Soell system. En route to its destination, however, the Halo was intercepted by a Guardian.[24]
In May 2560, the boat crew used one of Installation 07's beacon towers to broadcast the ring's galactic coordinates to human space[25][26] along with an embedded distress signal informing the UNSC that the Infinity had been ambushed and was feared lost. On June 12, a Swords of Sanghelios relay satelite outside the edge of the Urs system picked up the transmission which Arbiter Thel 'Vadam shared with Spartan Olympia Vale.[27]
During the Battle for Zeta Halo, the Master Chief responded to distress calls from various Marine squads.[28]
On June 7, the Master Chief had Joyeuse cycle an encrypted distress call to Echo 216 for the Pelican to pick them up at the Silent Auditorium.[29] Once they reached the exterior port, Joy increased the signal emissions and began sending out distress pings on multiple bands and radio frequencies, auto-cycling through channels. Picking up the signal, Fernando Esparza arrived to help with four Swords of Sanghelios in what appeared to be a Banished Phantom rather than Echo 216.[30]
