Michael-120,[2] more commonly known as Mike, is a SPARTAN-II supersoldier and a member of Gray Team. He is an expert with technology and computers.

Biography

Early life

In 2517, he was kidnapped from his home and taken to Reach to be conscripted into the SPARTAN-II program. Even though he was only six years old at the time, he learned to fly a D77-TC Pelican dropship just by watching the pilot fly him into camp. He later attempted to escape by stealing one and flying it out of the camp, subsequently blowing it up when the UNSC pursued him. Afterward, he was chosen along with Adriana-111 and Jai-006 to form Gray Team.[3]

In 2525, with the rest of the SPARTANs, he underwent augmentations to enhance their abilities. He was one of the 45 out of 75 SPARTAN-IIs to survive the process.

Battle of the Rubble

"At least we're both making friends out here. Shame Jai lacks the social knack..."
— Mike after forming a plan with Juliana

During the Human-Covenant War, Mike and the rest of Gray Team were sent deep behind enemy lines to wreck havoc on both the Covenant and Insurrectionists. Mike flew Gray Team's freighter, the Petya. In 2535, Adriana and the other members of Gray Team were sent behind enemy lines in order to destroy the navigation data held by the survivors of Madrigal, a world in the 23 Librae system that had been glassed by the Covenant not long after Harvest. The survivors were living in the Rubble, an asteroid space station built by the insurrectionists orbiting Hesiod. When they first discovered the Rubble, Mike believed that if the Rubble turned out to be a threat, they should destroy it with their complement of Shiva-class nuclear missiles.[4] A small fleet of Kig-Yar, lead by Reth, had created an alliance with the insurrectionists to trade weapons and slipspace drives.[5] However, these Kig-Yar were ordered by the Prophet of Truth to steal data from the humans that would lead the Covenant to other human colonies and Earth.

Later, Adriana returned to the Petya with Ignatio Delgado, a resident of the Rubble that was attempting to find information about the Kestrel. Unlike Jai, Mike did not care about Adriana's apparent favoritism of Delgado, whom Jai believed was an Insurrectionist.[6] While aboard the Petya, the Spartans were contacted by the Rubble's artificial intelligence, Juliana. Despite their attempts to originally prevent her from communicating, the Spartans eventually agreed to hear Juliana out. In exchange for defending the Rubble from the Covenant, Juliana agreed to give the Spartans the data they wanted.[7]

When the UNSC Midsummer Night arrived in the system, it was under attack by multiple Insurrectionists. He correctly came to the conclusion that he could not save the Midsummer Night from all the ships. Shortly afterward Juliana informed Gray Team that the Midsummer Night's crew would survive if the Spartans aided the Rubble. She sent the coordinates of Ignatio Delgado's location to Mike, and ordered them to keep Delgado protected and she would help free the Midsummer Night crew.[8] While Delgado and Jai aided the Midsummer Night and her crew, Adriana and Mike pursued smuggler Peter Bonifacio to prevent him from giving the navigation data to the Kig-Yar.[9] The two Spartans encountered the insurgent leaving the Rubble aboard his freighter, Distancia. Mike quickly disabled his ship and Adriana boarded the freighter. Bonifacio promised that he would tell the Spartans where he hid the data if they allowed him to escape, which they reluctantly agreed to.[10] After retrieving the navigation data, Adriana returned to the Petya and the Spartans agreed to let the Kig-Yar betray and kill Bonifacio in time.[11]

Battle of Metisette

Main article: Battle of Metisette

When Adriana and Jai were preparing to aid ODSTs in destroying Kig-Yar equipment on Metisette, Mike wished to join but Jai told him that he needed to stay behind since they could not risk losing the Petya.[12] Eventually, Mike had to abandon the Petya. All remaining UNSC and insurgent personnel were lead to the Exodus asteroid or aboard the Midsummer Night. The asteroid, powered by slipspace drives, and the frigate escaped into slipspace to escape a large Covenant fleet entering the system.[13]

The Exodus asteroid and the Midsummer Night safely arrived at the 18 Scorpii system. The asteroid's inhabitants were safely evacuated before the asteroid shook itself to pieces while in orbit around the human colony of Falaknuma.[14] After, Mike and Gray Team met with Admiral Preston Cole and Commander Hadley who granted them the use of a UNSC prowler, as the Petya was abandoned in the 23 Librae system. Hadley gave the Spartans new orders to venture even further into enemy lines, much to the satisfaction of the Spartans.[15] After the events in The Rubble, Gray Team spent a majority of the Human-Covenant War behind enemy lines, often targeting and assassinating prominent commanders and religious leaders.[16]

Operation: SUNSPEAR

After Reach fell to the Covenant in 2552 and the extinction of humanity seemed imminent, the Office of Naval Intelligence deployed Mike and Gray Team on a mission to retaliate against Sangheili Fleetmasters who had glassed human worlds. The mission, dubbed Operation: SUNSPEAR, had Gray Team traveling to the Sangheili colony world of Glyke in a Prowler and destroying it with a NOVA bomb. As they were traveling to Glyke, Gray Team received a Condition Endgame order which stated that the Covenant had discovered the Sol system and had launched an attack. After this point, their Prowler's long-range communication equipment had been damaged, cutting them off from the wider UNSC. After arriving at Glyke in 2553 with no knowledge that the war had ended, Gray Team voted to detonate the NOVA bomb, despite evidently not coming to a unanimous consensus. They landed on this surface to some opposition, planted the device, and retreated back into orbit to observe the detonation. The explosion completely destroyed Glyke and severely damaged Gray Team's Prowler, forcing them to evacuate in a Bumblebee escape craft. After several days of waiting for retrieval, Mike and the rest of Gray Team entered Cryo chambers and entered cryosleep in hopes of being retrieved by friendly forces. After several years, they were recovered in the debris field of Glyke by Rojka 'Kasaan and stored on board the Unwavering Discipline until their fates were decided by Rojka.[16][17]

Carrow Conflict

Awakening and Escape

In 2558 at the onset of the Carrow Conflict, Mike and the rest of Gray Team were released from their cryo chambers by UEG envoy Melody Azikiwe while the Unwavering Discipline was being boarded by Thars 'Sarov's forces. Mike gathered information on their situation and whereabouts from a nearby console while Jai and Adriana checked on an injured Melody and engaged Rojka and Mrata. They then recovered their Bumblebee escape craft from a hanger and escaped the ship. Mike piloted the craft towards Carrow's surface with the intent of reaching the human city of Suraka. He was unable to reach is destination due to the lifeboat beginning to come apart in Carrow's atmosphere and was forced to crash land in the Uldt Desert. Mike briefly attempted to send out a distress call after crashing before evacuating the life boat and pushing it into an oasis in order to smother a fire.[18][17][19][20][21]

The Udlt Desert and Gila Station

After learning more of the post-war situation from a recently awoken Melody, they began traveling on foot towards Gila Station in the northern part of the Karfu Mountains. During this trip, Mike expressed anger towards being a soldier and being forced into war upon war. Ninty-six kilometers out from their destination, Gray Team was engaged by a Banshee, which they promptly destroyed. Arriving at Gila Station, they were admitted into the facility by Commander Greg van Eekhour, whose pleasant demeanor earned the team's distrust. As such, Mike decided to explore the station in order to get a general layout of the facility and locate any supplies. He then joined Van Eekhour and Adriana in the station's briefing room, where he fielded questions about the SPARTAN-II program from the ONI agent. Afterward, Gray Team confronted Melody and Van Eekhour over being deployed into the Carrow Conflict. This led to the team discussing Operation: SUNSPEAR for the first time since they carried it out. They were then briefed by Melody and Van Eekhour on the threat posed by the Jiralhanae Chieftain Hekabe and the Sharquoi situated below Suraka. Sometime after the briefing, Gila Station was attacked by a Sangheili assault team led by Thars. Mike and the rest of Gray Team were ordered to leave Melody and Van Eekhour behind and take the station's Warthog to Suraka to assist in the fight. While discussing if they should return to the station to save Melody, Mike reaffirms that the three of them are still a team, relieving some of the tension present between the Spartans since Operation: SUNSPEAR.[22][23][24][16][25][26][27]

Entering Suraka

Ten minutes outside of the city, Gray Team was engaged by one of Thar's Banshees, which was eventually destroyed by Adriana. During this skirmish, they witnessed human ships making their attack run as a part of Operation: BUZZHAWK and felt the subsequent crash of the destroyed Jiralhanae cruiser Foebane. They were then engaged by two Voice of Maardoth Banshees. Adriana took out one before the other was destroyed by a squad of Surakan Militia Volunteers soldiers. This squad, led by Sergeant Rae Carson, took Gray Team to a bunker where they allowed themselves to be detained as a show of good faith. They then waited to relay their information regarding the Sharquoi to the Surakan leadership. After the initial Sharquoi attack, they were moved to a different bunker on the outskirts of the city where they were questioned by Governor Ellis Gass and Vice-Governor Lamar Edwards. From this exchange, a plan to assassinate Hekabe was put into motion. Before they started the operation, Gray Team was joined by Rojka and his remaining forces, who had recovered Melody from Gila Station and pledged themselves to fight against Hekabe and the Sharquoi. Both groups were deployed alongside Sergeant Carson's squad to skyscrapers overlooking the crater where Hekabe was commanding the Sharquoi, with Mike spotting for Adriana as they lined up a good shot on the Chieftain. [28][29][30][31]

Ambush on Thars

After the assassination attempt failed, Gray Team retrieved Rojka and fled the building in a Pelican dropship, witnessing the detonation of a dozen Surakan thermobaric mines around the edge of the crater and a portion of the Sharquoi retreating back into the Forerunner facility at the center of the crater. They were then transported to the Surakan command bunker, where they devised a plan with Rojka to engage Thars and force him to keep his fleet from falling into the hands of the SHarquoi. Mike secured them a Pelican for them to travel into the Uldt Desert along with Melody in order to meet with Thars in a faux prisoner transfer and duel between the two Sangheili. They were able to ambush Thars and his forces with the help of Rojka's last surviving warriors. However, the Spirit dropship that they intended to capture and take to the rival Sangheili's fleet was destroyed in the battle, leaving them powerless to stop the Sharquoi from taking over Thar's fleet. [32][33][34][35]

Battle of the Sharquoi Hive

Gray Team, Rojka, and Melody were then met by Ellis, who laid out a plan for defeating Hekabe and his forces. She had rigged a M68 Gauss cannon with a HAVOK tactical nuclear weapon as a power source, creating a device that fired a concentrated Electromagnetic pulse. This blast would neutralize the vertex, leaving Hekabe unable to command the Sharquoi. Gray Team then refined the plan, with Mike suggesting that they enter the Forerunner facility via aerial insertion and mount the device on a M121 Jackrabbit as opposed to a Warthog. The team was deployed into the structure alongside a militia squad led by Corporal Wyse, with Mike riding inside of the Jackrabbit and maneuvering it to the bottom of the shaft during the drop. Mike then attempted to drive the Jackrabbit across a bridge that led to Hekabe's position. As the team neared Hekabe's position, a falling Sharquoi struck the front of the Jackrabbit, immobilizing it and forcing Mike to evacuate the vehicle and engage the Sharquoi. He and Adrianna provided covering fire as Jai removed the device from its mount and carried it towards Hekbe's position. Mike was then attacked by two Sharquoi, narrowly surviving the blows. After Ellis fired the device, he was attacked by another Sharquoi. Mike, the rest of Gray Team, and Rojka were then immobilized by Sharquoi who were being controlled by Ellis, who informed them that she planned to detonate the nuke and they all had ten minutes to evacuate the facility. The team fled up the stairs, with Mike carrying Melody and unsuccessfully attempting to hail a Pelican. A ways from the entrance to the facility, the team was picked up by a Pelican that was hailed for them by Ellis. They were able to escape the nuclear blast, though their Pelican was caught in the shockwave and crashed with no casualties.[35][33][36][37][38][39]

Rejoining the UNSC

After a UNSC force arrived on Carrow, Gray Team and Melody were taken aboard the UNSC Welcome to the Snipehunt and received a hero's welcome from the crew while exiting their Pelican. They then were escorted to a meeting with ONI Commander Ivrin Yarick, where Melody was dismissed from ONI service. Yarick then offered Mike and the rest of Gray Team a choice: either allow their unit to be decommissioned and assigned to other areas of the UNSC's operation, or they could continue to operate under ONI's supervision as a part of an interspecies strike force consisting of members of the Swords of Sanghelios. They collectively chose the latter option, with Mike requesting a Prowler as a condition of the squad's involvement in the operation. Mike and the rest of Gray Team are now stationed on the Winter-class prowler UNSC Perilous Contest as a part of this strike team.[40][41]

Personality and traits

"We're Spartans. I don't know anything else. I have nothing else."
— Mike-120 about the future of Gray Team in 2558.

Mike was a technical prodigy: he could use any device with expertise after watching it being operated only once. He could also design many tools, such as the EMP bomb used to disable the Kestrel.[42] He had a rather brash view of life, and enjoyed taking risks simply for the sake of taking risks. He also had a joking nature. This is partly why Adriana enjoyed Mike’s company more than Jai’s. Like the rest of Gray Team, Mike enjoyed dangerous, difficult and life-risking missions behind enemy lines.[15]

Mike would often become flustered and annoyed when he did not have control of his equipment.[43] Mike seems to be careless about any ship he pilots; according to ONI officer Hadley, Mike and his team always requested a new ship for every mission, only to lose it in almost every one.[15] For his high level of technical intelligence, Mike became a friend to Juliana.

After Operation: SUNSPEAR and Gray Team's reawakening on Carrow, Mike's appearance and demeanor changed significantly. His armor was scarred and damaged from fighting on Glyke, with two noticeable divots inflicted by an Energy Sword forming an X on his left breastplate. Like the rest of his team, he was deeply affected by Operation: SUNSPEAR, expressing his anger by questioning Jai's actions, making conversation difficult, and causing tension within the unit. He also expressed his anger over being a soldier forced into war after war, indicating that resentment of his position may have existed at one point. These feelings seemed to boil over by the end of the Carrow Conflict.[24][23]

At some point during his time as a soldier, Mike used a SECURITY-class Mjolnir helmet on a Gen1 Mark V core.[41]
