The 40mm grenade is a type of lethal and nonlethal munitions in the service of the United Nations Space Command.[1][2][3][4]

Known types[edit]

Mk 110 MOD 2 HEDP[edit]

The Mk 110 MOD 2 High-Explosive Dual-Purpose (HEDP) is a type of 40mm grenade utilized by the M319 grenade launcher and the M460 automatic grenade launcher.[1][4] Both grenade launchers have two detonation modes, depending upon the way it is detonated after firing. The first detonation mode, upon being fired, bounces off a surface once, or when it strikes a target, will detonate almost immediately. The second detonation mode results in a delayed detonation, usually when the user takes their finger off the trigger after holding it down for a time.[5]

XM20P EMP[edit]

The XM20P EMP grenade is capable of emitting an electromagnetic pulse upon detonation, stripping enemy infantry of their personal shields and temporarily disabling vehicles. It is also utilized by the M319 and the M460 grenade launchers.[1][4]

Unidentified canister[edit]

This unidentified 40mm grenade is typically a canister holding high explosive filler;[2] it shares the same canister as a type of UNSC smoke grenades, albeit featuring a yellow, rather than blue, band. On some canisters, the main body is coated with a thin rubberized material for easy grip. The lid contains the activator switch and fuze mechanisms. Designated as a defensive grenade, it is intended to be used from prepared positions.[6] It was commonly carried by Orbital Drop Shock Troopers during the Fall of Reach and the Battle of Mombasa in 2552.[7][8][9][10] Three of these grenades were typically attached to the ODST armor's belt by attachment connectors on the canister's lid.[6]

Unidentified flashbang[edit]

This unidentified 40mm flashbang grenade is a nonlethal grenade fired from the underbarrel M301 grenade launcher,[11] which is typically attached to the M6634 flamethrower or assault rifles in the MA5 series.[12][13]

Production notes[edit]

In Halo: Reach, the serial number M45A771B on the canister is mirrored; since the same serial number is printed on the smoke grenade, the M392 DMR, and the MA37 assault rifle, it is likely all four items share the same decal sheet.
