Taylor Henry "Dutch" Miles[3][7] (service number 21175-12121-TM) is a former Orbital Drop Shock Trooper.[1][2] He served in Alpha-Nine, a squad led by Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck during the Battle for Earth and in the post-war era. He is married to Gretchen Ketola. Though the two retired, they eventually came out of retirement to become Spartan-IVs just in time to join the reformed Alpha-Nine in fighting the Created conflict.[6]

Biography[edit]

Early life and military career[edit]

Taylor Henry Miles was born on June 3, 2519 in Losantiville, Seven Hills, Mars.[1][2][3][4] Before enlisting in the UNSC, Miles worked as a road-train driver, at some point driving the Flying Dutchman. He also went to university for some time, studying religion and philosophy.[8] During this time, he adopted a world view he would carry for the rest of his life.[9]

Drafted while attending university,[9] Miles properly enlisted in the UNSC Marine Corps on September 9, 2540 and he eventually became a corporal.[1][2] The last time he visited Earth prior to the Battle of Earth was at a weekend pass, the day before he applied to the ODSTs. Miles was accepted and while an serving as an ODST, he befriended Romeo and became romantically involved with another ODST, Gretchen Ketola, whom he later married. Gretchen's injury by an Insurrectionist mine changed Miles' personality and he became more serious than before.[10] He also served in operations on the Coral asteroid belt, and the Jericho Space Elevator. Miles' time as a road-train driver had prepared him for the arduous tasks of a heavy weapons specialist and driver in the ODSTs, roles he often filled during missions.[8]
