"You deserve the truth. The enemy is at our gates... their numbers are overwhelming. Any Marine who makes this stand with us will not survive the day. For every moment that we hold the enemy at bay, more innocent people can escape—when they do, they will go forth and tell the story that you write today. You will be remembered."
Admiral Jacob Keyes during the Fall of Reach.[3]

The Human-Covenant war or Covenant War was a conflict between the Covenant and the United Nations Space Command.

History[edit]

Earlier parts of the war[edit]

Several events took place prior to DEFIANT GLASS. Harvest was glassed by the Covenant prior to 2540. As well, Operations FALLEN WALLS, HORIZON, and IRON FIST all took place as well.[4] The Covenant would also arrive at Oban and, using a luminary, locate and kidnap a young Makee.[5]

The Office of Naval Intelligence would first spot High Charity over Harvest in 2540 and designated locating and assessing it a priority task.[4]

DEFIANT GLASS[edit]

By 2552,[6] Operation: DEFIANT GLASS was active and Silver Team were assigned to it along with Jacob Keyes.[4]

Madrigal and the keystones[edit]

Main article: Battle of Madrigal/Silver

The Covenant's first known appearance on Madrigal was in 2552. There, they would attack Jin Ha's outpost. Silver Team was deployed and managed to wipe out the Covenant force, though not before the Covenant destroyed much of Jin Ha's faction.[6]

Finding the next keystones[edit]

Some time after Eridanus II, Criterion would be glassed by the Covenant.[7]

Escalations[edit]

Operations in 2553[edit]

Main article: Operation: SHEPHERD

Over the course of six months into 2553, the Covenant would glass several worlds including Madrigal and Estuary.[8]

The Covenant would jam signals from a comms relay on the planet Sanctuary. At the same time, the UNSC attempted to evacuated civilians. However, frictions between the local population and the Marines would prevent this from happening immediately. It wasn't until glassing operations began that the civilians evacuated.[8]

Following Operation: SHEPHERD, FLEETCOM believed that Fumirole was going to be glassed next. For her efforts on Sanctuary, Talia Perez would be awarded the Colonial Cross in a highly propagandized event.[8]

Fall of Reach[edit]

In April 2553,[9] the Covenant located and infiltrated Reach and took out the Visegrád Relay.[10] With Visegrád out of commission, the Covenant invaded the planet properly.[3]

Survivors from the battle were "scattered all over the galaxy," according to Miranda Keyes.[11] Several survivors from WHITE TOWER's final stand fled to Aleria.[9]
