History[edit]
Early history[edit]
Reach was the first extrasolar world settled by humanity and would be important for further colonization due to its habitability and slipspace routes.[1]

Fall of Reach[edit]
- Main article: Fall of Reach/Silver
In April of 2553,[2] Covenant forces managed to take down the Visegrád Relay and Cobalt Team when they were sent to investigate. Rather than defending Reach, the UNSC leadership,[3] in particular Admiral Margaret Parangosky,[2] decided to abandon Reach to its fate while evacuating key military assets off of the planet.[3]
With the relay down, the Covenant were able to create a blind spot with which to land troops, and began a ground assault, targeting the planet's power stations which would knock out the orbital defenses so that the Covenant fleet could move in to glass the planet. Under the command of Admiral Jacob Keyes, the remaining UNSC forces made a stand to buy civilians time to evacuate, but WHITE TOWER was eventually overrun, leading to deaths of Keyes and Spartan Vannak-134.[4] By dawn, the planet's orbital defenses were down, and the Covenant had begun glassing, although some civilian transport ships managed to escape with survivors. Two days later, Dr. Catherine Halsey told John-117 that the evacuation ships had scattered in the chaos and there was no way of telling if any other Spartans aside from the remnants of Silver Team had managed to escape as well.[2] The survivors of Reach were subsequently scattered all across the galaxy.[5]
Government and society[edit]
Defenses[edit]
It is part of Defense Zone Beta and defended by the Reach Military Complex.[1] A prominent facility on the world is WHITE TOWER, whose protection was paramount.[6]
Economy[edit]
Reach was a key mining world and has the most significant shipyards outside of Sol.[1]
Culture[edit]
Most of the population is of Eastern European descent, predominately Hungarian and Romanian.[1]
