Unggoy combat harness

The Unggoy Combat Harness is a type of body armor issued to the Covenant's Grunt warriors. It provides basic protection from hostile fire and the elements and is also equipped with a breathing apparatus for the Unggoy.
Breathing Apparatus
The gas is stored in extremely cold tanks inside the suit, and is provided to the user through a breathing mask that covers over half of the alien's head. The triangular backpack attached to a Grunt's back contains a small Methane tank. Attached to every Grunt's wrist is a readout (measured in Covenant units) of the amount of methane left in the Grunt's pack.[1] When the tank gets low, a resupply of methane must be found quickly or the Grunt will suffocate. The suit also displays the color of the Grunt's rank. In Halo 3, both the breathing mask and backpack component of the suit can be knocked off while the Grunt is still alive or dead; this causes the Grunt to suffocate if still alive. In Halo 3, if the actual breathing mask is knocked off of the Grunt then the Grunt will begin to suffocate, running in circles desperately until dropping dead from asphyxiation. It is interesting to note that in Halo 3, even if Grunts lose their methane tank on their back, they can continue fighting without suffocating. This may mean that there is emergency methane, stored inside their Combat Harness. However, this is more likely just for game play reasons.
Defense
In addition to its life support role, a Grunt's pack is also equipped with armor. This armor can withstand limited amounts of fire, especially from energy weapons. The M6D is capable of easily cracking through the armor and is considered by some to be the standard weapon for such actions.[1] The armor piercing rounds of the Assault Rifle are also potent weapons against the harness. As well as defending against projectiles and plasma, it prevents a limited amount of fall damage to its user, like its Sangheili counterpart. Despite this, most variants are vastly inferior to the other types of armor adorned and used by the Covenant, no doubt due to the costs required to produce the suits for the extremely large population of Unggoy soldiers. Some variants are also equipped with helmets, Active Camouflage and a methane-filled breathing apparatus.
Variants
Multiple variants of the standard combat harness and breathing apparatus exist (not including the various colors representing different ranks), some with specialized purposes. In Halo: Combat Evolved, it is very common to see Unggoy with curled methane tanks as opposed to the usual semi-pyramidal ones, and somewhat larger face masks. These Grunts are commonly referred to as "Curl-backs." Heretic Grunts as seen in Halo 2 distinguished themselves as much as possible from the Covenant they rebelled against, wearing armor that covers only their ribcage, no helmets, elongated face masks, and not one but two glowing blue methane tanks. In Halo Wars, Grunts specially trained as kamikaze-style warriors bear an unusually large, transparent, cylindrical methane tank. They charge their enemies and ignite this, and the extremely flammable gas inside creates an enourmous explosion, which can inflict heavy injuries and casualties. They die in the blast. A Grunt Minor was seen with a helmet in The Babysitter, and the reason for this is not currently known. It could signify service in a particular division of the Covenant Armed Forces or be the special gear of a rank not seen in the games. Also, in the upcoming prequel game to the Halo Trilogy, Halo: Reach, some Grunts will be outfitted with much different harnesses than seen before. They will wear full coverage helmets with eye slits of a totally different model, and carry heavy, barrel shaped tanks not unlike those of the aforementioned suicide Unggoy.
Trivia
- In Halo 3, the breathing mask can be removed by projectiles and explosions. It can also be removed by hitting a Grunt's body after its death. Even though a grenade can rip off the breathing mask in Halo 3, you cannot see the mask come off but you can see methane rise in the air.
- It has been shown that in Halo: Contact Harvest the breathing mask of the Unggoy makes speech difficult for them, as it muffles their words.
