"Welcome to paradise. It's a beautiful day. Sunny skies. No sign of rain and just a small chance of being found and destroyed any second."
— Unidentified UNSC marine[2]

Nysa is a classified colony world formerly occupied by the United Nations Space Command, and the location of the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science.[3][4] It is a significant Spartan training site following the Created uprising and the destruction of Laconia Station.[2] After the UNSC defeat on March 4, 2560, Nysa would become a Banished outpost.[1]

Overview[edit]

Ecology[edit]

Nysa is a habitable planet with boundless forests.[4] Its ecology is very similar to Earth's.[5]

History[edit]

Discovery[edit]

Nysa was discovered during an Office of Naval Intelligence exploration survey and hidden away before the Colonial Administration Authority found it.[4] During the early years of the Human-Covenant War, ONI Section Three would construct a facility there, with at least some parts of it being transformed into the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science.[6] The academy is supported by multiple stations and defenses, including a deep space communications hub, five surface-to-air artillery emplacements, and several other outposts scattered across the continent.[7]

Post-war period[edit]

During the Created uprising, it served as a rally point and staging area for surviving Spartans and other UNSC forces who escaped destruction at the hands of the Created after the destruction of Laconia Station.[8]

The UNSC Victory of Samothrace and the rescued survivors of Rossbach's World would arrive at the planet on November 19, 2559. Swords of Sanghelios ship Shadow of Intent would soon after join them at the planet. Together at Site Z, they would discuss their shared interests of the Lithos, Dovo Nesto and the Order of Restoration. Following this, Samothrace and Intent would deploy to Venezia while some of the Rossbach's World survivors would return to Earth.[4]

Iratus[edit]

Spartans Hieu Dinh and Sigrid Eklund arrive on Nysa with the Jiralhanae AI.

Following an operation on Camber, Spartan Hieu Dinh obtained the Banished volitional AI Iratus, the first made from a Jiralhanae brain donor and a product of covert research undertaken by the Lux Voluspa corporation. With the AI housed in his RAKSHASA-class Mjolnir, threatening his vitals, Dinh and Sigrid Eklund retreated to Nysa and the AJ Academy of Military Science,[9][10] arriving by February 29, 2560.[11] In an effort to pull Iratus out of Dinh's neural interface, Spartan Commander Laurette Agryna uploaded a simulation of the Banished facility on Camber into the Academy's combat simulator, and assigned Spartans to participate in the simulation to act as bait, and trap Iratus into an ONI server. The plan was a success, and Iratus was trapped, saving Dinh's life and giving the UNSC access to a Banished archive.[12] At Commander Agryna's request, an instance of Iratus was isolated from the rest of the AI and put into quarantine before being replicated and distributed to qualified Spartan-IVs as a Personal AI to test within War Games.[13]

During one War Games live-fire drill, a stray grenade detonated in front of a door, scraping its paint and revealing an Office of Naval Intelligence seal.[10] Behind the door was an elevator leading to a mothballed ONI Section 3 facility, a relic of the Academy's past.[6] On February 29,[7] Spartan Hieu Dinh and an Academy trainee managed to open the door and descend the elevator shaft into BLDG-09, where they found a Brokkr Armor Mechanism still holding a set of Mirage IIC armor. Dinh, who suspected that Iratus, thought to be safely contained elsewhere in the Academy, was plotting something, had his fears confirmed when Iratus infiltrated the Mirage IIC armor. Iratus had gleaned the existence of BLDG-09 from Dinh's memories and managed to break free of his prison, intent on seizing the Academy for the Banished. In short order, the hostile AI spread from BLDG-09 and subsumed numerous Academy systems.[6]

On March 3, 2560, UNSC forces received the distress signal from Nysa to Anvil Station; in response, Stationmaster Toda 'Murajai mobilized some of his forces to Nysa; led by the A'uzr-pattern sword frigate Sword of Conjunction, the task force was composed of three Condors as well as Amity, Harmony, and Sympathy Wings.[14]

By March 4, and despite all efforts of the Academy personnel, they would suffer materiel and personnel losses before the Banished attack, forcing them to leave the planet to the alien alliance, with the Anvil Initiative's forces helping with Nysa's evacuation, before regrouping on Anvil Station.[1]

Government[edit]

Defenses[edit]

The Spartan-IVs of AJAMS provided security support to all of Nysa's facilities.[4]

Production notes[edit]

In mythology, Nysa is the name of a legendary, possibly mythological region where the young god Dionysus was raised by nymphs.
