"The state of this universe can shift at any moment. That's why we're needed: to endure. To ensure stability. To inspire hope."
— Laurette Agryna[2]

Spartan Commander Laurette Agryna is a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier, notable for having served as the commanding officer for the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science on the hidden outpost world of Nysa. As Spartan Commander for the academy. she oversees the facility's day-to-day operations alongside the tasking and training of its Spartan personnel.[3] In March 2560, the academy was attacked and occupied by the Banished, resulting in Agryna's exile to Anvil Station alongside the other survivors of the attack.[4][5]

Biography[edit]

Agryna is rescued by a number of Spartans in London during the Covenant invasion of Earth.

Early life and career[edit]

As a young adult, Agryna lived in London, Britain on Earth. During the Battle for Earth in 2552, she found herself facing down Jiralhanae forces of the Covenant in the city.[4][6] Ultimately, she was saved by the timely arrival of Spartans. This experience ultimately inspired Agryna to join up in the United Nations Space Command, where she displayed qualities of leadership and a willingness and capability to improve the quality of the soldiers under her—ultimately going on to join the SPARTAN-IV program,[7] becoming a supersoldier herself.[2] She was in the same basic training class as fellow Spartan Hieu Dinh,[4] resulting in a close working relationship between the two.[8]

Following the destruction of Laconia Station during the Created conflict,[2] Commander Agryna took on the role as the acting commander at the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science on Nysa,[7] and was charged with training and mentoring Spartan-IV recruits at academy.[1] She held this role by November 19, 2559, alongside the responsibility of overseeing the allocation of Spartan security assets to Nysa's various outlying sites.[3]

On November 19, Agryna was present during a visit to the world by UNSC Victory of Samothrace, following the superheavy cruiser's successful extraction of several VIPs from Rossbach's World. The meeting was a joint one conducted with the Swords of Sanghelios, with their assault carrier Shadow of Intent also present. When initially requested by Samothrace's Captain Abigail Cole to meet the Swords of Sanghelios party with a Spartan escort, Agryna ensured that she would see to it personally alongside Admiral Jilan al-Cygni - expressing her tense relationship with, and distrust of the Sangheili. Agryna was present throughout the following meeting, discussing the Order of Restoration and Dovo Nesto, the Created, and she was present for the extraction of critical intelligence from Black-Box (one of the AIs recovered from Rossbach's World) which would ultimately put the UNSC on the path of kidnapping Chloe Hall from Mindoro.[3]

On December 20, 2559,[9] Agryna was involved in overseeing the arrival and training of a new, fresh batch of Spartan recruits - one of which being "Rook". While on the Pelican to the academy, Agryna got word of the destruction of UNSC Infinity at Installation 07 and the ringworld's sudden disappearance a week earlier. Despite this news, she was seemingly unfazed and instead set to work on tasking the new Spartan recruits with their initial training, before ordering them to the base's AI laboratory to recieve a personal AI, BUTLR. However, due to the news about Infinity's disappearance, Agryna did leave the recruits to conduct their training on their own, as she needed to follow up on the news herself.[2]

On January 24, 2560, Commander Agryna ordered the deployment of Spartans Sigrid Eklund and Hieu Dinh on a reconnaissance mission to the Chiltift Basin shipbreaking yards on Camber, which were the site of a Banished operation.[5]

Fall of the academy[edit]

In late February and early March of 2560, Agryna oversaw the retrieval and containment of a Jiralhanae AI, Iratus, within the academy's network. While initially successful, Iratus was ultimately able to escape containment, resulting in the total loss of the Avery J. Johnson academy by the Banished. These events began on February 15, 2560,[5][9] when Agryna was present for the return of Spartans Eklund and Dinh at the academy, following their mission to Camber. During their mission, Dinh had come into contact with Iratus, resulting in the AI infecting Dinh's neural interface and putting him into a coma. Agryna, alongside Rook and the base staff, helped the two Spartans inside and proceeded to debrief Eklund on what had happened. Agryna declared that they had to separate the AI from Dinh, and afterwards, get it to tell them everything it knew.[10] To this end, Agryna had the academy's technicians upload the schematics of the Banished facility on Camber to the Academy's combat simulation. On February 18, she ordered as many recruits as possible to hit the sim, hoping to irritate Iratus enough to leave Dinh and go after them. The ploy worked, and Iratus was seemingly contained, along with the Banished archive.[8]

Throughout the next few days, academy staff noticed a number of glitches within their systems, a result of Iratus attempting to escape confinement. Ultimately, on February 29,[5][9] the AI was able to escape into the broader network, effectively taking control of the academy with the aim of calling the Banished for help. Commander Agryna and the base technicians responded quickly, attempting to slow down Iratus' control by flooding the AI with zetabytes of randomly-generated junk data, though this measure could only stall Iratus, and not stop him. Realising that it was only a matter of time until Iratus was able to call the Banished to Nysa, Agryna made the decision to order a evacuation of the base's key personnel aboard the academy's sole Zheng He-class courier, alongside the enactment of the Cole Protocol to prevent enemy access to the base's data stores. However, she also realised that the scale of the threat being faced was too much to handle alone; as such, she and Dinh headed to the base's slipspace COM launcher to send an emergency SOS to Anvil Station. Agryna reasoned that with Laconia Station lost, and Naxos and Virgo Stations unknown (but presumably lost or compromised due to them also having a Leonidas AI), Anvil was the best bet due to its lack of an AI. While the SOS was successfully sent, Iratus was also able to use the base's deep-space communications to send out his own distress signal, calling the Banished to Nysa.[11]

Ultimately, Iratus used Agryna's distraction to take control of the academy's surface-to-air missile defences and use them to fire upon the attempted evacuation of the base. The AI then proceeded to turn the missiles on the base itself, giving Agryna a critical decision to make; she could destroy the launchers and leave the base defenseless against the Banished, or allow the launchers to destroy the base and have nothing left to defend. Ultimately she chose the former, ordering all of the base's available air assets to destroy the SAMs before they could reload and fire again.[11] The attack began three days later on March 3, with the arrival of the New Colonial Alliance's dreadnought Ghost of Kholo in orbit. Before beginning the invasion, Agryna was invited to a parley with the NCA's leader, Ilsa Zane, in which Zane demanded that Agryna turn over Iratus and in return, the Banished would leave with no bloodshed; and if Agryna handed over Dinh, Zane would even keep her word. Agryna refused these terms to Zane's delight, resulting in the start of a massive invasion of the planet.[4]

Agryna joined the Spartans in the defence of the base, though almost immediately began to question whether the attack could have been prevented had she made better decisions prior. She took a team consisting of Spartans herself, Eusebio and Denning to fend off the Banished and made it to Ops West, wherein they put the base into lockdown, which was promptly overriden by Iratus - who proceeded to unlock and open all of the base's doors and gates to the Banished. At this point she sent out a number of fireteams to enact the Cole Protocol at the base's outlying facilities and hopefully limit the damage the Banished could inflict.[4]

As the Banished flooded into the academy into the early hours of March 4, the relief force sent by Anvil Station arrived in orbit, consisting of the sword frigate Sword of Conjunction and light frigate UNSC Fearful Symmetry. Conjunction was the first to deploy forces onto Nysa, consisting of multiple orbitally-dropped Riftborn teams who were tasked with finding and locating Commander Agryna for exfiltration. One of the teams was able to eventually find Agryna at the cost of a Sangheili warrior, Ovi 'Taar. Agryna's group (now consisting of herself, Dinh, and Eklund) found 'Taar in his final moments and were able to rescue his Riftborn partner, an injured Spartan Adrian Vesco. The group then retreated into the base's AI lab to await exfiltration. By this point, the enactment of the Cole Protocol and RUINA subroutine had forced Iratus into the AI lab's servers to prevent his own deletion; the group would be unable to wipe Iratus from the system, but Vesco had a tracking beacon that would be able to call an exfiltration ship to their position. Agryna initially refused to leave, vowing that as the base's commander she should go down with the planet; however, she was persuaded by Chief Engineer Hannah Roberts, who noted that any remaining effort to resist the Banished was futile. Roberts could stay and try to purge as much data from the system as possible so that when the Banished arrived to take posession of the AI, they would have as little UNSC intel as possible. Agryna reclutantly agreed to this plan, and the four Spartans retreated to the academy's landing pad to be evacuated by Pelican Bravo 198, with SPARTAN-IIIs Jun-A266 and Rosenda-A344 leading the group to extract.[4]

After taking off, Bravo 198 docked with UNSC Fearful Symmetry, which promptly returned to Anvil Station.[4] The academy, and Nysa, were declared lost to the Banished, with Agryna proceeding to write an after-action report addressed to Jun, the Chief of Staff of Spartan Operations (COSSPAR) surmising her actions in the lead-up to the attack, and her own reflections on the battle. In the report, Agryna took full responsibility for the fall of Nysa, and felt that she had failed to live up to the standards expected of her. She also recommended all of the fallen on Nysa for full posthumous commendation.[5]

Personality and traits[edit]

Agryna displayed qualities of leadership; this ultimately allowed her to join the SPARTAN-IV program.[7] As the instructor of the Spartan recruits, she is optimistic and encouraging.[2]

Agryna has a complicated relationship with the UNSC-Swords of Sanghelios alliance. While her professional nature prevents her from actively expressing any distrust or hostility towards Sangheili, she is generally reluctant to involve them in operations whenever possible.[11] During Shadow of Intent's brief visit to Nysa in late 2559, Agryna insisted on escorting the UNSC and Swords party through the halls of Site Z, something she would not have done were it only a group of humans visiting the site.[3] Agryna has never provided a reason for these feelings of distrust, and during the attack on Nysa was willing to put them aside and accept help from the Sangheili complement of Anvil Station.[11]

Equipment[edit]

In the academy, Agryna employs an armor with blue and white coloring, made by the Materials Group.[12] At some point after the Battle of Earth, Agryna has lost her left leg and uses an artificial limb as a replacement.[1] With this combination, Captain Cole considered that Agryna looked every bit the Spartan Commander she was, and that no one present in the room at the time (including several senior UNSC flag officers) would question her status in the role.[3]

She also has a bee-shaped pendant, originally a necklace she wore as a young adult during the Battle of Earth[2] and something she continued to carry with her through basic training and into her professional career. During situations of high stress she has a tendancy to turn the pendant over in her hand.[4] A stencil of the bee is also printed on Agryna's MJOLNIR armor.[2]
