The Battle of Ballast[4] was a battle that took place in 2550 on the UNSC colony of Ballast during the Human-Covenant War.
Battle[edit]
Darren and his Marine unit were sent by a captain on a suicide mission against the Covenant. Rather than sending in a rescue, the captain abandoned Darren and his unit to die and covered it all up. However, the mission was a poor decision on the captain's part in the first place, so when everything went wrong, the captain doomed Darren and his unit in order to preserve his own reputation.[3]
Aftermath[edit]
It is unclear if the UNSC or Covenant forces on the planet won the battle, but propaganda produced by ONI stated that the battle was a UNSC victory.[2] Signs on the Quito Space Tether hint that the colony still existed during the Battle for Earth.[5]
Members of E2-BAG/1/7 after the battle would provide feedback on munitions used as part of a study entitled Machines, Materiel and Munitions from the Human-Covenant Conflict, 2525 - Present.[4]
The captain that ordered Darren's unit would survive the battle. The captain was later made an integral part of Operation: RED FLAG, working in proximity to Darren's father, Gabriel. After the Fall of Reach, both men ended up on the UNSC Pillar of Autumn. There, Gabriel killed the captain as an act of vengeance for the events that transpired on Ballast with Darren.[3]
