Sprinkled throughout the dense foliage of [[Sierra 117 (Level)|Sierra 117]] are carved hearts with initials and dates. Since the setting of the mission was Africa, some people think the second carving was made in the year 1995, and that this was probably a young couple sitting in the trees writing these things, although other people think that it could be any other year or even names of [[UNSC]] members.

Carved Letters, initials rendered as a romantic gesture, are an Easter egg that can be seen in the Halo 3 campaign mission, Sierra 117.
