Armor coatings (Halo Infinite)

Armor coatings, also known as armor skins, are an element of player customization in Halo Infinite. They are a seven layer system that change the materials and coloration of a player's armor permutation.[1]

Changes

Between their unveiling and release, certain armor coatings underwent changes, ranging from minor to major. These include:

  • The Granular coating, the render of which originally displayed a predominantly cyan Spartan with green accents. The techsuit of said Spartan was yellow and red. The final version of the coating has the player's Spartan taking on a primarily yellow color, with some minor red, blue, and green accents, while their techsuit is fully black. In the final game, the 343 Industries-exclusive armor coating, Unicorn Dream, bears a large resemblance to the pre-release version of Granular.
  • The original version of the Granular coating, seen in promotional images for the Chips Ahoy promotion.

  • The Blood Shadow coating, revealed in a promotional image featuring seven Mark VII-clad Spartans, originally featured metallic red on the upper torso's portion of the techsuit. The rest of the coating remained unchanged from its launch state.

  • The Red Shift coating, which underwent a more subtle change, with most wear and tear seen on the pre-release render being removed from the final product. Additionally, most colors on the coating appeared to be much brighter.
    • It was announced in the Season 1 Outcomes Report that the Red Shift coating, along with the Watchdog coating, will be updated to be more in line with previously released renders.

  • The Karaba Sirocco's color scheme is a reference to the Mobile Suit Gundam series and possibly to the MSK-008 Dijeh mobile suit from the 1985 anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, due to the usage of the light pale cyan color scheme instead of a pure white or grey. The name references organization Karaba and character Paptimus Scirocco also from 1985 anime Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. It is possible the references to Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam are due to Halo Infinite's campaign taking place on the Zeta Halo ring.
  • The Ultramarine Corps' name, color scheme, and description are references to the Ultramarines Legion, one of the twenty Space Legions in the Imperium of Man, from the table-top franchise "Warhammer 40,000".
    • The First Founding is the event when the original twenty Space Marine Legions, including the Ultramarines, were created by the Emperor of Mankind.
    • The color scheme is similar to the one used by the Angels Revenant chapter, one of the Ultramarines' successor chapters.
