Long range stealth orbital drop pods are an advanced kind of drop pod utilised by the military forces of the United Nations Space Command.[1]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
Long range stealth pods are constructed of titanium, lead foil, and encased in a layer of stealth ablative coating similar to that used on the prowler stealth warships of the UNSC Navy. Unlike standard drop pods used by the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, long range stealth pods can be fired from a UNSC carrier situated in slipstream space, from which they automatically emerge into real space and (over the course of several hours) proceed to make landfall on a target planet.[1] This method of operation is broadly similar to technologies such as slipspace probes and COM launchers; though with the latter more distinct thanks to their ability to manouevre through slipspace to their target. Vice Admiral Ysionris Jeromi described the long range pods' operation as comparable to a "a turd swirling around in an old-fashioned gravity toilet", versus the superior capabilities of a COM launcher.[2]
Usage[edit]
Due to their specialised role, long range stealth pods have rarely been seen used by conventional UNSC forces. In 2545, three hundred such pods were launched from the carrier UNSC All Under Heaven to deploy SPARTAN-III Beta Company onto Pegasi Delta to launch Operation: TORPEDO. The stealth pods took seven hours to travel from the carrier to the Spartans' target site, with nine such pods being destroyed during the insertion run.[1]
