Halo: Rendezvous With Ramen

Halo: Rendezvous With Ramen is a short story in the Waypoint Chronicle series written by Jeff Easterling and Alex Wakeford. Unlike previous entries in the series, Rendezvous With Ramen is exclusively included in the print compilation Halo: Waypoint Chronicles - Volume One, released on May 26, 2026. The story is an excerpt from the in-universe book "Rendezvous with Ramen" by Arturo Bustamante - a character first introduced in 2022's The Official Halo Cookbook.[2]

Official summary[edit]

"Chapter excerpt from the book Rendezvous with Ramen by renowned chef and food critic Arturo Bustamante, published in 2558. The Office of Naval Intelligence audits Bustamante’s account of visiting the Sekibo District in Rio de Janeiro—a compound occupied by Sangheili and Unggoy asylum seekers.[2]"

Plot synopsis[edit]

The story is framed in-universe as ONI-SEC2-MA-842, a document sent to Michael Sullivan at the Office of Naval Intelligence for a material audit. It contains an excerpt from Chapter Three of Rendezvous with Ramen, a biographical book written by renowned chef and food critic Arturo Bustamante in 2558.

In his biography, Bustamante recounts his visit to Rio de Janeiro's Sekibo District to explore cuisine within UEG space. There, he meets Father Gustavo Barbosa, a Catholic priest who established a church among Covenant asylum seekers. After discussing how religion coexists with aliens and the Covenant religion, Father Barbosa takes Bustamante to Rio Keep, a Sangheili-owned restaurant staffed by Unggoy. Bustamante observes the establishment's music and cuisine, including a Sangheili rendition of feijoada—a bean-and-meat stew prepared with colo meat and Subanese spices.

Father Barbosa introduces Bustamante to the owner, a Sangheili who has adopted the name "Peter." Peter recounts his history, beginning with his escape from the Day of Jubilation, one of the two Syfon-pattern assault carriers in Prophet of Regret's Fleet of Sacred Consecration. Stranded on Earth after the Battle of Mombasa, Peter eventually abandoned the Covenant after Jiralhanae reinforcements from Truth's fleet executed his fellow Sangheili. He and the remaining survivors retreated into hiding before eventually surrendering to the UNSC. Following their interrogation, they remained on Earth as asylum seekers after the conclusion of the Human-Covenant War.

The excerpt ends with Peter's reflections on his past and future. In the document, an ONI operative deliberates on whether the agency should pressure the publisher, Singer-Edwards Ink, to censor portions of Peter's account. While noting that Peter shared his story freely, the operative acknowledges concerns that the publication could invite violence against former Covenant members protected by the UNSC. Ultimately, the operative dismisses the case, concluding that Bustamante likely included the account—and the potential for controversy—solely to generate publicity for his book.

Trivia[edit]

  • The title, "Rendezvous with Ramen" is a play on the title of the classic science-fiction novel Rendezvous With Rama by Arthur C. Clarke.
  • During Peter's account, the Day of Jubilation was mistakenly called the Day of Retribution before being referred to as simply Jubilation.
