The Ekesan-pattern Heavy Transport[1], known to humanity as the Umbra, is a fast, lightly armored Covenant surface transport vehicle used to ferry troops into battle.[2]
Overview[edit]
Design details[edit]
The Umbra is an arch-shaped ground vehicle that uses a Boosted gravity propulsion drives, the same anti-gravity technology that most other standard Covenant ground vehicles use. At the top of the Umbra's arch is the driver's cockpit and a gunner's seat with a plasma cannon. Below the driver and gunner seats is the carrier pod. On each side of the Umbra's carrier pod is a square, luminous touchpad that, when pressed, releases the lock and causes the outer wall to lower and extend a ramp leading into the vehicle.[2] The ramp on each side of the vehicle leads to ten troop stations for a total of twenty troop stations per carrier pod.[3]
Usage[edit]
The Umbra is generally used to conduct long-term ground occupations by the Covenant military, with regular usage on the worlds of the Covenant's client species. During the Human-Covenant War, it was used to cement Covenant garrisons on contested Human colonies, helping to prevent collateral damage to the Forerunner artefacts humanity had unknowingly built atop of.[1]
Operational history[edit]
In 2526, Kelly-087 witnessed the Covenant Fleet of Swift Justice deploy two Umbras via air drop by a Mokol'ta-pattern Spirit on Netherop. With some assistance, Kelly was able to secure an Umbra[2] and rendezvous with Amalea Petrov and her First Platoon in order to aid John-117 and the rest of Blue Team on their mission to secure the Covenant frigate, Lucky Break.[3] The second Umbra was spotted by John and Frederic-104 at the UNSC Phyllis Wheatley's landing site. The Sangheili quickly retreated to their craft after ten Banshees spotted the two Spartans and began an attack run. After the Banshee squadron was destroyed, John took out the gunner before Fred took out the troops in the Umbra with his M41 rocket launcher. The driver managed to leap free, but was shot dead by John. The Umbra plummeted off of the Forgotten Highway into a gorge.[4] The captured Umbra was used to chase after the Wheatley's survivors[5] and then by Blue Team and First Platoon to go after the Covenant forces retreating to the Steadfast Strike. The humans were eventually forced to dismount and continue on foot.[6]
Umbras (alongside Shadows) were a part of the vehicle complement of the Governors of Contrition exiled to Atropos after September 2552. An Umbra was used by the Minister of Aretalogy Kanto'Boreft as his personal transport while traversing the planet's surface.[7]
