The Caveman Family in Sierra 117.

The Cavemen are a series of Easter eggs on the Halo 3 level, Sierra 117, and the Halo 3: ODST Epilogue, where the player can find ape-like figures with Marcus Lehto's face. They are associated with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection achievements Missing Link, Primate, Haplorrhini, and One Got Away.

Halo 3[edit]

First Caveman[edit]

The First Caveman can be found in the area where Sergeant Major Avery Johnson's Pelican is shot down. Across the water, above and to the right of where a Jackal Sniper will spawn on Heroic and Legendary difficulties, the First Caveman can be seen sitting in a tree. Unlike the other Cavemen, there is no way to reach him.

Locating this Caveman unlocks the Missing Link achievement in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Caveman family[edit]

To find the Cavemen family, go past the point where Johnson says his Pelican was shot down. Then, enter the jungle and stick to the left wall. After climbing over some rocks, jump over a giant rock in the way, and then crouch under a tight ledge to find them. The leftmost, and largest, Caveman is holding what looks like a teddy bear, while three Cavemen to the right of him are arranged from smallest to largest.

Locating this Caveman unlocks the Primate achievement in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Lone Caveman[edit]

YouTube tutorial on how to reach the "Lone Caveman" using Butterfly Jumps.
There is a Caveman sitting on a cliff outside the level, in the area where you rescue Sergeant Major Johnson. He is accessible by means of a glitch, but he is still visible by using a scoped weapon, such as a sniper or the binoculars. To get where the Caveman is, there are a variety of options, both requiring Co-op:

  • The first method involves Butterflying in the corner where the Iron Skull is found and utilizing a respawn glitch to get out of bounds.
  • The second method involves a variation of Butterflying known as the Elevator Glitch or "Butterfly Jumping," and requires both players entering corner with a near 90 degree angle and having one player jump on the other's head. Next, both players need to start jumping, and both players will begin moving upward like an elevator. Once on top of the concrete structure, use the same respawn glitch to get out of bounds. and reach the Caveman.

Locating this Caveman unlocks the Haplorrhini achievement in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Trivia[edit]

  • When the player shoots any Caveman, it will bleed. However, even if the player does large amounts of damage (i.e. with a grenade or headshot), nothing will happen as the Cavemen have no scripted death animation.
  • If the player shoots the teddy bear being held by the largest Caveman in the "Caveman Family", blood will also come out.
