— Auntie Dot

Auntie Dot (AI Serial Number: ADT 6849-9) also known simply as Dot, was a "dumb" AI active in the service of the UNSC Army between the years of 2541 and 2552.[1][2] Specializing in operative military intelligence, she notably served as intelligent support and liaison between Colonel Urban Holland and Noble Team during the Fall of Reach.[1]

Overview[edit]

Auntie Dot's primary precepts included tactics and intelligence analysis; she was primarily created to serve as an overwatch adjunct during United Nations Space Command field operations, and worked as a direct liasion between teams deployed in the field and their commanding officers.[2]

Rather than personifying herself in the form of a humanoid avatar like the majority of AIs, Dot's personal representation is a grid of glowing, constantly changing blue lights. Characteristic of "dumb" military intelligence support AIs, Dot typically speaks in a calm, dry, articulate voice, displaying little emotion compared to Smart AIs like Cortana.[1]

Operational history[edit]

Human-Covenant War[edit]

Auntie Dot was activated on May 9, 2541.[1][2] She served between that year and the Covenant attack on Reach in late 2552. During the Fall of Reach, Dot worked alongside Colonel Holland and several UNSC Special Forces units including Noble Team to provide observation and intelligence where possible through security cameras and satellites orbiting the planet connected to the UNSC battle network. She directed Noble Team during the Battle of Sword Base in late July 2552[4], alongside the Battle at Szurdok Ridge[5][6], Operation: UPPER CUT[7], the Siege of New Alexandria[8][9] and the campaign's closing engagements again at Sword Base[10] and finally the Battle of Asźod.[11]

During the campaign on Reach, Auntie Dot herself was housed in a suite of physical servers located somewhere on Reach. The fate of the servers - and thus Dot's survival - is unknown[1], though the chances they survived the planet's glassing are unlikely.[2]

In-game information[edit]

Halo: Reach[edit]

Auntie Dot can be unlocked as a custom voice for use in the Firefight component of Halo: Reach multiplayer. In Halo: The Master Chief Collection, she can be unlocked as part of the Series 1: Noble progression track.

Production notes[edit]

Auntie Dot was introduced in Halo: Reach as the AI companion to assist Noble Team throughout the game's campaign. She appears in almost every level of the game and is unlockable for use in the game's Firefight mode. Additionally, she appears throughout the game as the loading screen animation between missions. In-game, she was voiced by actress Carole Ruggier.[12]

In the first week of Bungie's "All-Star" contest in January 2011, the task was to produce an image of what a humanoid representation of Auntie Dot might look like.[13] The winner depicted Dot as an elderly woman knitting a blanket with her characteristic grid pattern sewn into it.[14]

Trivia[edit]

Dot's grid accompanies the credits sequence to Reach, and at the very end, just before it fades completely into darkness, it displays a seven.
