The Boarding of Vigilance with Piety was an operation conducted aboard the Chel Tor-pattern storm cutter Vigilance with Piety by the crew of the Shadow of Intent to capture the Minister of Abnegation, Kafo Dein, a leader of the Order of Restoration in the orbit of the gas giant Kus'kah on November 5, 2559.

Background[edit]

During the fall of High Charity in 2552, a flotilla of San'Shyuum evacuees were able to flee the besieged city using the launch of the Anodyne Spirit to cover their escape. The evacuees intended to flee to the shield world of Cloister, where they would be safe from the firing of the Halo Array by the High Prophet of Truth and be able to rebuild galactic civilization in the San'Shyuum image. Ultimately, the High Prophet's plan was foiled during the Battle of Installation 00.[1]

In late 2553, two members of the flotilla, Prelate Tem'Bhetek and the Minister of Preparation, Boru'a'Neem, departed from the flotilla and took a contingent of Jiralhanae to strike against the Sangheili in a plot to genocide their homeworld with a prototype Halo installation. This plot would be discovered by Rtas 'Vadum and his crew, including Blademaster Vul 'Soran and Unggoy Ranger commander Stolt, after answering a distress call from Sangheili colony world Rahnelo after the Prelate had captured three Sangheili to test the prototype Halo on; the Kaidon Tulum 'Juranai and two of his sons. His daughter, the scion Tul 'Juran, would join Rtas and his crew, looking to get revenge on the Prelate for kidnapping them. Ultimatly, the crew of the Shadow of Intent were successful in destroying the prototype Halo with help from Tem'Bhetek, who betrayed the Minister after learning he had manipulated the loss of his wife to the Flood to use his rage against the Sangheili. After which, Rtas learned of thousands of San'shyuum surviving the fall of High Charity and elects to lead mission to locate these San'shyuum and decide which ones deserve punishment for their crimes or had been misled like Tem'Bhetek.[2] Over the next six years, they would successfully hunt down San'shyuum to stand trial, learning that many belonged to the Order of Restoration, an ancient order seeking to restore the Covenant. However, many were too proud to confess and would attempt to flee, only to be put down.[3]

The crew of the Shadow of Intent would eventually come to learn of one particular San'shyuum, the Minister of Abnegation Kafo Dein. As a leader of the Order of Restoration under its leader, High Lord Dovo Nesto, Kafo Dein's capture would bring justice for those Sangheili he betrayed and potentially assist in locating Dovo Nesto to prevent further atrocities. However, Kafo Dein would manage to escape them previously.[3]

The Operation[edit]

On November 5, 2559, Kafo Dein would command the Chel Tor-pattern storm cutter Vigilance with Piety on a mission to loot Forerunner ports and armories on an artificial moon orbiting the gas giant of the various treasures within. Among which were five war sphinxes. The Shadow of Intent would learn of this some cycles earlier and planned to dispatch a strike force consisting of Tul 'Juran, Vul 'Soran, Stolt, and Oda 'Mavamu with the objective of capturing the ship and Kafo Dein.[3]

Deploying six ship-bores from Shadow of Intent to get them on board, 'Juran would infiltrate the ship through the deployment bay while 'Soran, Stolt and 'Mavamu infiltrated at different points with the aim of disabling the storm cutter's maneuverability and weapons to enable Shadow of Intent to neutralize it for capture. Using the captured war sphinxes for cover, 'Juran was able to sneak past the Jiralhanae crew by moving between guard rotations and headed for the ship's slipspace drive while Vul 'Soran moved to the maneuver drive control-pylon and Stolt headed for the primary weapon section. Ova 'Mavamu headed for the power systems, however, the power systems were not a necessary target as 'Mavamu was a young warrior looking to prove himself and was ordered to draw back by 'Soran.[3]

Upon reaching the unguarded slipspace drive, Tul 'Juran fed the input fiber chaotic data to subvert its functionality. However, once she was finished, Ova 'Mavamu moved on the power systems, which alerted the crew and began searching the other decks. Tul 'Juran moved out of slipspace drive room and took out three Jiralhanae with her energy lance and moved to help 'Mavamu instead of securing transport for evacuation while 'Soran and Stolt moved on the bridge to capture Kafo Dein. Fighting through more Jiralhanae, 'Juran learned that Mavamu was still alive but was heavily injured. After killing a Brute Captain with a Skewer round, she found the injured 'Mavamu close to death. Vul 'Soran then informed the two the bridge was devoid of Kafo Dein or any Jiralhanae. Moments later, they learned he had escaped via Ren escape pods and activate the ship's self-destruct sequence. Tul 'Juran refused to leave without 'Mavamu, but was ultimatly convinced to leave him behind as the young Sangheili told her to leave him, knowing he would only slow her down and wanting to die with honor.[3]

Making it back to the deployment bay, 'Juran found Jiralhanae fighting over the remaining Phantoms, Banshees and Seraphs aboard to escape the storm cutter's self-destruct and met with Vul 'Soran and Stolt. Without any other typical ships to escape with, Stolt suggested they use the war sphinxes to escape, as he had taken astrogation data from Vigilance with Piety that included control mapping for them. Commandeering three of the sphinxes, the three escaped the ship while the remaining Jiralhanae fought over the remaining two sphinxes before the storm cutter was destroyed. However, 'Huran would find Kafo Dein's pod and requested Vul 'Soran permission to terminate the Minister. The blademaster reminded her that they needed Dein alive for info on where Dovo Nesto or they would be a step behind the Order of Restoration, but she and Stolt agreed that the astrogation data could be enough to find the High Lord and didn't want to risk suspected that Dein was still after something on the artificial moon or hide to escape on a ship greater than the Vigilance of Piety rather than escaping the system completely in a slipspace-capable Ren. Vul 'Soran ultimatly authorized the change in plan.[3]

Pursuing the four Rens, Banshees, Phantoms and Seraphs from Vigilance with Piety would move on the three sphinxes. Kafo Dein would then broadcast a message to the three, and asked what he could give them to stop pursuing them. Vul 'Soran demanded he tell them where Dovo Nesto was located, which Kafo Dein refused. As his forces engaged the sphinxes, with the sphinxes making light work of the Covenant ships, Kafo Dein's Rens would make their way to the surface, using his troops as a distraction. However, Tul 'Juran would pursue him while Stolt and Vul 'Soran held off the other ships. While she was able to take out two of the Rens, but plasma fire from enemy Seraphs would disable her sphinx's weaponry and cause a breach. Too far out of range to communicate with Stolt or Vul 'Soran, Tul 'Juran rammed the sphinx into the remaining Rens, killing Kafo Dein as his Ren began breaking apart in the atmosphere of the artificial moon.[3]

Aftermath[edit]

Vul' Soran and Stolt would manage to save Tul 'Juran's life by using their sphinxes to slow her descent. However, all three sphinxes would be rendered ravaged and inoperable beyond repair as a result. They would be taken back to the Shadow of Intent , where 'Juran spent four day cycles asleep in recovery.[4]

The Order of Restoration would also have their operations set back with Kafo Dein's death, in addition to the lost troops, equipment and plundered Forerunner tech.[4]
