Habitat domes,[1] also referred to as hunting domes or hunting preserves,[2][3] are structures found aboard Covenant starships typically used as training areas, hunting grounds, animal paddocks, places of worship, and other recreational zones.[1][2]

Overview[edit]

Design details[edit]

Often taking the form of dome-shaped structures visible from the exterior of the vessel,[2][4][5] the interiors of habitat domes are populated with flora, fauna, and terrain intended to mimic certain biomes—including dense jungles,[6][7] mountainous forests,[3] and rocky mesas.[5] The interior perimeter of the domes consists of a wall that transitions into the dome formed of hexagonal sections which give the illusion of a natural sky, complete with simulated clouds.[3][5][7] On vessels like the Kerel and Syfon-pattern assault carriers, their habitat domes are not externally visible, and are instead presumably hidden within the ship's superstructure.[1][7]

The Mjern-pattern agricultural support ship's large habitat domes are prominently displayed.

Usage[edit]

Though the domes can support a variety of unique environments, they are generally tailored to the preferences of the vessel's San'Shyuum and Sangheili crew. However, habitat domes would occasionally service the needs of other species, such as vermiaries meant to sustain colonies of Lekgolo transplanted from Te.[2] Habitat domes are often used in the production of a ship or fleet's rations,[8] as well as to provide recreational spaces for the vessel's inhabitants; these functions include raising livestock, hunting game, combat training, and even religious purposes.[2]

The following vessels are known to feature habitat domes:

History[edit]

Habitat domes have been used by the Covenant at least since the introduction of the Mjern-pattern agricultural support ship or the Syfon-pattern assault carrier,[2][7] during the Third Age of Reclamation and Third Age of Discovery, respectively.[10][11] A variant of the Mjern-pattern utilized by the Ministry of Preparation had its larger aft habitat dome removed in favor of facilities filled with arcane instrumentation and a staff of chirurgeons used to create Prelates.[2] By the Battle of Meridian in 2551, the Prophet of Regret's quarters aboard his flagship, Solemn Penance, directly overlooked a habitat dome which featured lush jungles and flowing rivers.[7]

During Operation: METEORITE in 2551, ORION supersoldier Avery Johnson and Spartan-II Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 boarded the Covenant agricultural ship Triumph of Tolerance over the recently-glassed colony of Promise. While aboard the vessel, the two fought the Covenant crew within at least one of the ship's habitat domes featuring a biome with mesas, streams, and unique alien flora.[5][12]

In the midst of the Battle of Installation 04, the Flood managed to board the Infinite Succor, a Mjern-pattern agricultural support ship attached to the Fleet of Particular Justice. Once aboard the vessel, the Flood infected the crew, as well as the alien fauna within its hunting domes' swampy, jungle terrain. Special Operations Commander Rtas 'Vadumee and his team were sent to investigate, ultimately resulting in 'Vadumee initiating the Infinite Succor's self-destruct and escaping as the sole survivor.[6]
