The weapon has only seen limited use, its most notable combat use being in the Fall of Reach. Because of its relative rarity, the UNSC has theorized that its use is restricted either by branch or unit. Indeed, the weapon is only used by top-tier Sangheili ranks, including Zealots, Generals, and Special Operations warriors, as well as certain Jiralhanae shock troops.

The T50 DER/H fires explosive bolts of superheated plasma, with a single magazine containing six shots. When the plasma bolt hits a surface, it produces area-of-effect damage and a small "kick" to users and objects. The weapon shares many of its features with the heavier plasma mortar, including a slight downward arc to its shots.

The weapon can be considered a Covenant counterpart to the UNSC Army's M319 Individual Grenade Launcher. In general, the Concussion Rifle's effects resemble those of the Type-25 Brute Shot, despite different appearances and modes of operation. Unlike these weapons, however, the Concussion Rifle's bolts do not bounce or ricochet.

Ammunition
Much like the feed system of the Type-33 fuel rod gun, the concussion rifle utilizes a magazine cell instead of the battery system used by most Covenant weapons. Each magazine holds six explosive charges, and is automatically ejected to the side when the weapon is opened for reloading.

Advantages
The concussion rifle is a powerful weapon and is very good at disorienting your enemies, as the blast sends the target into the air and the flash momentarily blinds them. Due to the concussion rifle's ability to send enemies flying into the air, you can use this to send a particularly strong target such as a Hunter off the map to instantly kill them. This effect also makes it an effective anti-vehicle weapon, as multiple shots fired from a concussion rifle can make a Warthog flip through the air.

Disadvantages
The concussion rifle has a small magazine size and there is a scarcity of ammunition on the battlefield. Its blast is not as powerful as a Brute Shot or a rocket launcher and more shots are needed to kill powerful enemies. It is also very difficult to kill a shieldless Kig-Yar with this weapon, taking between two and three shots.

Trivia
*The concussion rifle serves as the in-game counterpart of the Brute Shot, as Elites are encountered much more frequently than Brutes during the campaign. In reference to this, the Halo: Reach strategy guide occasionally identifies the weapon as the "Elite Shot". However, the concussion rifle is wielded by both Elites and Brutes throughout the game, though this may be because Brute Shots were not implemented in Halo: Reach.
*Unlike the Brute Shot in Halo 3, the concussion rifle's fired rounds have a significant arcing drop, decreasing its effective range.
*It is possible, although extremely difficult, to shoot concussion rifle projectiles out of the air with a precision weapon. They can also impact on rockets or fuel rods when they are in its path and be locked on to by a Target Locator.
*In Halo: Reach and Halo 4, the turrets mounted on Type-44 and Type-52 Phantoms and Type-25 Spirits fire projectiles that are identical to and have the same firepower as concussion rifle rounds. This may be a vehicle-mounted variant of the Concussion Rifle.

The Elo'Nakada-pattern Firebomb Launcher[1] (UNSC Type classification: Type-50 Directed Energy Rifle/Heavy, T-50 DER/H)[2] is a Covenant infantry weapon, and a mainstay in the concussion rifle line of infantry plasma weapons.[3]

Overview[edit]

Design details[edit]

The concussion rifle fires 30mm Class-4 explosive plasma bolts[1], a form of munition similar in nature to the plasma mortars employed on the heavier vehicles of the Covenant - such as the Rizvum-pattern Revenant or the Wraith series of tanks. The weapon is fed by a disposable magazine cell capable of holding enough charge for six shots, as opposed to the batteries common in other Covenant directed-energy weapons - thus requiring a conventional reload. When fired, the explosive plasma bolts are launched in a projectile arc similar to that of the aforementioned heavy plasma mortars - though Covenant forces are typically reluctant to include the concussion rifle in a similar category.[2]

Development history[edit]

The Covenant on Reach.
An Evocati warrior Fahl 'Nto wielding the Elo'Nakada during the Fall of Reach.

The concussion rifle's design legacy can be traced back to the eponymous ancient Sangheili warlord Nakada 'Zadum, who was able to perfect the operating principles of the weapon during the Siege of Qikost.[1] This design predated even the signing of the Writ of Union or the formation of the Covenant itself, and was later modified over the empire's long history.[2] Unusually by Covenant standards, the Merchants of Qikost were able to protect the concussion rifle's design patterns from external San'Shyuum weapon-crafter influence - allowing the weapon to be modified to fit the Covenant's standardisation principles but restricting its manufacture to only Assembly Forges controlled by the merchants themselves on Qikost.[1] Despite the modifications that have been made to the weapon over time, the core purpose and functions have remained unchanged.[2]

Usage[edit]

Due to its introduction prior to the formation of the Covenant, the concussion rifle has been a mainstay weapon for the entirety of the empire's history, going up to its final days in 2552, in which it was heavily employed during the Fall of Reach.[4] The weapon's size and power dictated that it may only be employed by high-ranking personnel such as Zealots, Generals, Special Operations and Evocati[2] - something even noted by United Nations Space Command forces.[3] The weapon was additionally employed by Jiralhanae shock trooper units.[4] Personnel who were to use the concussion rifle were trained in specific battlefield tactics for the weapon's usage.[2]
