The NA4/DP is a large and bulky; rather than being attached to the frame of the projector, the fuel tank is carried on the user's back, allowing greater fuel capacity. In addition, the weapon can use a variety of flammable defoliants to compensate for the range of atmospheric and gravitational conditions it can be used in, including highly adherent napalm and oxide-mixed fuel.<ref name="hws"/> It continued to serve alongside the smaller and more portable variant M7057, especially after the encounter with [[the Flood]].<ref name="evg"/>

The NA4's primary function is to rout entrenched enemies. As such, NA4 users have a high attrition rate, despite the devastating damage they can inflict, due to the exposed fuel tanks which pose a critical vulnerability. The NA4 is compatible with the [[M301 Grenade Launcher]] attachment which can be used to launch [[flashbang grenade]]s. Hellbringers often do so before rushing enemy positions.

The NA4/Defoliant Projector[1] is a type of incendiary projector used by the UNSC Marine Corps, primarily by the Hellbringers. It is a designation which encompasses at least three distinct weapons.

Variants[edit]

M6634/Defoliant Projector[edit]

Main article: M6634 flamethrower

The M6634 Defoliant Projector is a large weapon which fires a napalm defoliant, often fed to the weapon by an external tank carried on the user's back. It was often used by Hellbringers in the early years of the Human-Covenant War, including at the Harvest campaign, Battle for Arcadia and Battle of Trove. The M6634 is compatible with the M301 grenade launcher attachment.[2][3]

M7057/Defoliant Projector[edit]

Main article: M7057 flamethrower

The M7057 Defoliant Projector is a somewhat smaller and more portable variant. Instead of napalm, the M7057 uses Pyrosene-V for ammunition, and has a gas tank located on the back of weapon rather than on the user's back. The M7057 is more decorative, with a face of a shark painted on the heat shroud. It saw use throughout the Human-Covenant War, particularly in its latter years.[1][4]

At least two versions of the M7057 exist. One of these has a nozzle which extends well beyond the heat shroud, and also has a large fuel tank protruding from the rear of the weapon, which can be removed and replaced on the battlefield to refill the weapon's fuel supply.[5] The second lacked this larger fuel tank, opting for a smaller one mounted just beneath the rear handle. Its nozzle was also much shorter, only barely extending beyond the heat shroud.[6]

M705 Incendiary Jet Tool[edit]

The M705 Incendiary Jet Tool, often nicknamed the "I-Jet", is a compact variant of the M7057 which is suitable for use in a vacuum. It is fed by a tank-pack, and uses self-oxidizing fuel. It existed in the early years of the Human-Covenant War.[4]
