Endless Summer (AI Serial Number: 4279)[2] was a fifth-generation "smart" AI attached to the ONI excavation team based in Zone 67 on planet Onyx. He was sent to replace the AI Deep Winter after it reached the end of its operational life span in 2551.

He took the form of a tall, red Cherokee Indian chief, bare-chested, wearing buckskins, and with a feathered spear in hand.[3] He would often bow upon initiating or ending a conversation.[1][4]

Biography[edit]

Unlike Deep Winter and Eternal Spring before him, Endless Summer was aloof and did not care for Camp Currahee to the south of him. He barely tolerated the staff there, namely Kurt Ambrose and his Spartan-IIIs. Endless Summer never initiated communication with them, unless in times of dire need.[3]

Less than a year into his life, he was confronted with the attack on Zone 67 and Camp Currahee by Onyx Sentinels. Invoking the authority granted to him in times of emergency by General Order 98.93.120,[5] Endless Summer ordered the Spartan-IIIs to defend Zone 67 after the defenders of the area were all killed by the Sentinels. He was contacted by Dr. Catherine Halsey once she arrived. In order to get Endless Summer's attention, Halsey sent him a Zen koan, aware that such a philosophical dialog would be irresistible to a smart AI.[1] Halsey managed to convince him to use the planet's Slipspace COM launcher to alert Earth so they could send forces to save them. The Sentinels later found and destroyed the launcher.[6] However, Endless Summer escaped the destruction of the COM launcher and his data center and later redirected the Spartans to the Sentinel manufacturing facility in Onyx's northern polar region in order to halt the production of Sentinels.[4]

Endless Summer was most likely destroyed when the planet disintegrated at the conclusion of the Onyx Conflict.
