— Mahkee 'Chava to Fireteam Osiris[2]

Mahkee 'Chava is a Sangheili shipmistress in service with the Swords of Sanghelios, commanding the Hekar Taa-pattern blockade runner Scorrin's Blade.[1] She led Swords of Sanghelios forces against Jul 'Mdama's Covenant during the Blooding Years, most notably during the Battle of Nuusra and Battle of Sunaion in late 2558.[1][2][3] 'Chava's two brothers are Oebrin and Silset 'Chava, both weaponsmiths.[1][4]

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Mahkee 'Chava was born and raised on Suban, the "blood-moon" of Sanghelios, along with her two brothers, Oebrin and Silset. Ever since she was a child, her mother had told her that her veins flowed with the fire and blood of Suban itself, knowing that she was destined for something greater.[1]

As Mahkee 'Chava grew older, she realized that she did not possess the patience required for the political maneuverings, trade deals, and clan management—matters which traditionally constituted the civil duty of female Sangheili. After Human-Covenant War came to an end, Arbiter Thel 'Vadam revived the Swords of Sanghelios and declared that military service would be open to all, 'Chava saw her chance.[1]

Ending Jul's Covenant[edit]

By 2558, Mahkee 'Chava was serving the Swords of Sanghelios as a shipmistress, fighting against Jul 'Mdama's reformed Covenant throughout the Blooding Years. On October 27, 2558, with the death of 'Mdama, the Covenant launched a desperate attack on the Swords of Sanghelios in the Nuusra territory on Sanghelios. Discovering the location of Arbiter Thel 'Vadam at Nuusra's Elder Council Chamber, the Covenant laid siege to the building in an effort to assassinate 'Vadam.[2]

Meanwhile, the United Nations Space Command sought access to the Guardian in Csurdon Sea near the city of Sunaion off the coast of Nuusra. After gaining the permission of the Swords of Sanghelios, UNSC Infinity traveled to Sanghelios and 'Chava was sent to pick up Spartan-IV Fireteam Osiris from Infinity in a Mikpramu-pattern Phantom. Dropping off Osiris in Nuusra, 'Chava informed the Spartans of 'Vadam's location, and Osiris resolved to help the Arbiter at the Elder Council Chamber. As Osiris continued to battle Covenant forces, 'Chava provided them with support, as she directed them towards the Elder Council Chamber. When Osiris neared the chamber, 'Chava deployed two Mantis walkers from Infinity and Swords of Sanghelios infantry to help the Spartans fight off Covenant forces. After Osiris helped 'Vadam defeat the Covenant in the chamber, 'Chava picked them up in her dropship and returned them to the Swords of Sanghelios military base nearby.[2]

'Chava participated in the Battle of Sunaion later that day as the Swords of Sanghelios launched an attack on the remainder of the Covenant at the city, which would give Osiris an opportunity to board Sunaion's Guardian. As Osiris battled their way towards the Guardian's location, 'Chava deployed Swords of Sanghelios forces to aid the Spartans. She could not ferry the Spartans directly to the Guardian, as Covenant Upisa'weri-pattern Shrikes throughout the city prevented her from doing so. Instead, 'Chava informed Osiris of a passage to Sunaion's undercity that would take the Spartans directly to the Guardian.[3]

Banished attack on Suban[edit]

Mahkee 'Chava: "Yet you have joined the Banished, which allies with humans, rather than one of the many Covenant remnant groups."
Orna 'Fulsam: "Even vermin can prove useful. They are so easy to turn against each other."
Mahkee 'Chava: "Then perhaps they are not so different from Sangheili."
— Mahkee 'Chava points out Orna 'Fulsam's hypocrisy[1]

By early 2560, Mahkee 'Chava held command of the Hekar Taa-pattern blockade runner Scorrin's Blade within the Sanghelios home defense fleet. When the Banished entered the Urs system with the intent to claim Suban and its unique resource of kemuksuru for themselves, the Sanghelios home defense fleet met the Banished in the skies of the blood-moon. Instead of joining the rest of the fleet, 'Chava had been ordered by Fleetmaster Arkad Nar 'Kulul to keep Scorrin's Blade at a safe distance and comprehensively assess the situation, particularly with respect to the Ghost of Barolon, the dreadnought flagship of the attacking Banished fleet. Additionally, Scorrin's Blade was present to provide limited support to a joint Spartan-Sangheili operation occurring simultaneously at the nearby Mines of Shua'ree.[1]

While coordinating with the ground operation, Scorrin's Blade received a hail from the shipmaster of the Ghost of Barolon, High Warlord Orna 'Fulsam. The Banished shipmaster attempted to convince 'Chava to swear allegiance to the Banished to prevent more Sangheili bloodshed. He promised that only the humans she was working with would be killed, claiming that they were the true architects of the Blooding Years, along with Arbiter Thel 'Vadam. When 'Chava made it clear that she had no interest in allying with traitors, 'Fulsam bade his farewell, requesting that she think on his words. He stated that his offer would remain open until their next round of battle. Before ending the transmission, 'Fulsam made one last request: that she tell Fleetmaster 'Kulul that Let 'Volir sends his regards.[1]

Personality and traits[edit]

Mahkee 'Chava describes herself as too impatient for the roles traditionally fulfilled by females within Sangheili culture. This impatience also shows itself in her role as a shipmistress, experiencing boredom while listening to the ranting of Orna 'Fulsam. She has somewhat of a penchant for sarcasm. Despite her self-admitted impatience, 'Chava is shown to be observant and calculating, noticing minor details and weighing outcomes before acting.[1]

Production notes[edit]

  • Mahkee 'Chava is voiced by British actress Jean Gilpin in Halo 5: Guardians.[5]
  • She is the first female Sangheili ever featured in a Halo game. However, she is never seen in person, only heard via in-game transmissions.
