Universe and lore[edit]
- Main articles: Type-33 needler, Nahle'hax-pattern needler
In the original Halo 2, the Needler featured is the Type-33 needler, a weapon used by the infantry of the Covenant.
In Anniversary, the weapon's model was replaced with that of the Nahle'hax-pattern needler, featured in Halo: Reach and Halo 4.

Campaign[edit]

The Needler's return in Halo 2 is functionally the same as its original counterpart in Halo: Combat Evolved, though with some balance tweaks. It is now dual wieldable and has slower rate of fire, though its needles now track enemies more aggressively. Needles that have been deflected will lose their tracking, and a target must now be within sight in order for needles to track them; if they disappear, they will lose their lock, though regain it if the target reappears. The weapon's melee attacks and reload animations are also faster, overall making the weapon much more aggressive.
In the campaign the Needler is particularly effective at dealing with Brutes in the later levels of the game, thanks to abundant ammunition and the Brutes' lack of energy shielding.

Notes[edit]
- ^ Results in an impact damage lower bound of 0.7. Due to the way the engine is programmed, the damage lower bound is only reached when both dual weapons are fired during the same frame. Damage otherwise appears to be interpolated between upper and lower values. It is unknown if this multiplier also affects detonation or supercombine damage, further testing required.
- ^ Due to how tickrate is rounded down, the rate of fire is 7.5 rounds per second rather than 8.
- ^ Dual wield spread penalty is only active while both weapons are firing.
