Production notes[edit]
- "In Halo, the pistol behaved more like a rifle than the assault rifle, and the assault rifle behaved like a submachine gun. Now we have a rifle that behaves like a rifle, an SMG that behaves like an SMG, and a pistol that behaves like a pistol. Basically I initiated a 'throw off the shackles of FPS conventions' party and just about everybody showed up."
- — Robert McLees[2]
In Halo: Combat Evolved, the Pistol was infamous for being a powerful utility weapon, something which fans and developers considered illogical for a handgun. This caused the developers at Bungie to reconsider the sandbox for Halo 2, part of which involved taking the original Combat Evolved pistol tag and re-saving it as the newly-christened battle rifle.[3] The Pistol—now renamed the Magnum—was also given a redesign, losing its ability to scope in, a significant debuff to its outgoing damage, and an increase to both its magazine size and rate-of-fire to feel more like a conventional sidearm. The weapon's visual design was accordingly changed, losing the wireless scope to reflect the gameplay adjustments, and becoming more distinct thanks to a matte black finish as opposed to the original design's reflective chrome.[4]

So during H2 prepro I clicked ‘save as’ on the “pistol” tag and called it the “battle rifle” and the artists built a new model." (Retrieved on Jan 27, 2023) [archive]
