The Silent Cartographer is the fourth campaign level in Halo: Campaign Evolved. It is a remake of a level of the same name originally in Halo: Combat Evolved.

The level was the first from Campaign Evolved showcased at the game's reveal.

Transcript

{Cutscene}

Cut to an ocean of Halo, facing a forest island in the middle where a large metal tower is prominent. Three Pelican dropships rapidly approach. The Master Chief stands in the rear of the troop bay of the middle Pelican, Echo 419, with a group of marines onboard.

• Cortana: "The Covenant believe that what they call the 'Silent Cartographer' is somewhere under this island. The Cartographer is a map room that will lead us to Halo's control center."

The Pelicans arrive at the island and are fired upon by a Spirit dropship, and they take evasive maneuvers. They fire upon Covenant troops on the nearby beach. One of the Pelicans is badly hit by plasma, and begins to fly away, flames bursting out. Several Unggoy Minors attempt to fire upon the Pelican but are left cowering as Echo 419 approaches and guns them down and begins to descend. Cut to the cockpit, Foehammer turns to face the marines.

• Flight Captain Carol Rawley (COM): "We're approaching the LZ. It's gonna be hot! Get set to come out swinging!"

{Gameplay}

The Master Chief and the marines in his Pelican disembark next to another Pelican, where more marines do the same as they storm the beach.

Note: although some marines are listed in captions as "Mendoza" or "Bisenti", they will be referred to as "Marine 1" or "Marine 2" for continuity's sake, as both are present elsewhere during the next two missions.

• Rawley (COM): "Touchdown! Hit it marines!"

• Sergeant Marcus Stacker: "Go! Go! Go!"

• Marine 1: "We got a Covenant welcoming party, sir. They're dug in real tight, too."

The marines clear out the Covenant on the beach, establishing a patrol area near a large metal archway.

• Cortana: "Area secured."

• Rawley (COM): "Affirmative, Echo 419 inbound. Somebody order a Warthog?"

• Stacker (COM): "Hey, I didn't know you made house calls, Foehammer!"

• Rawley (COM): "You know our motto: 'we deliver'!"

Foehammer sets down a Warthog, and the Master Chief boards with two marines.

• Cortana: "Let's go find the map room. That will show us the location of Halo's control center."

• Cortana: "I've been able to pinpoint the main facility by cross-referencing Covenant survey data and religious texts. We were right, it's on this island. I've marked the entrance with a navpoint."

They reach a cliff, where a facility is visible overlooking a beach where a Spirit is dropping off more Covenant.

• Cortana: "There! In the cliff wall. I'll bet the Silent Cartographer is somewhere inside that facility."

The Master Chief comes across large amounts of Covenant inside and outside of the facility.

• Cortana: "They're already inside! We have to get in there and stop them before they learn the location of the control center."

• Cortana: "The Covenant are putting up a real fight... the Cartographer must be here."

• Cortana: "My analysis indicates that the map room should be at the bottom floor of this facility. Let's keep going inside."

The Master Chief proceeds down and comes across a narrow hallway and a small squad of Covenant. At the end of the hallway is a lone Sangheili Zealot standing behind an open doorway.

• Cortana: "Don't let them lock the doors!"

Despite his best effort and killing all of the Covenant, the Master Chief is unable to kill the Zealot, who seals himself behind the door.

• Cortana: "Interesting. I underestimated the Covenant's understanding of Halo's subsystems. We need to find the security override to get this door open."

• Cortana (COM): "Cortana to Keyes."

• Captain Jacob Keyes (COM): Go ahead, Cortana. Have you found Halo's control center!"

• Cortana (COM): "Negative, Captain. The Covenant have impeded our progress. We can't proceed unless we can disable this installation's security system."

• Keyes (COM): "Understood. We're still en route to the objective... I may be out of contact when we get there. Here are your orders: I want you to use any means necessary to force your way into the facility and find Halo's Control Center. Good luck, people. Keyes out."

• Cortana: "Let's move down the beach. Keep an eye out for any unusual structures that could house the security system."

The Master Chief comes across a small group of Covenant near a lightly forested path, across from a crashed Warthog with dead marines.

• Cortana: "It looks like there is a path into the interior of this island."

The Master Chief proceeds to the center of the island, where a pair of Mgalekgolo are in wait at a round outdoor platform. On the other side is another facility overlooking a section of the beach, and leading underground where he is attacked by another Mgalekgolo pair. He finds a central room with a large hologram of a structure.

• Cortana: "Use the holo-panel to shut down the security system."

{Cutscene}

The locked door opens to pitch black. The Zealot aggressively illuminates the dark room by igniting his Energy sword. He growls and spreads his mandibles, and walks forward slowly.
