Description
Universe and lore
Blood Gulch is based on the Halo: Combat Evolved level, Blood Gulch. Like its namesake, Blood Gulch is set in a vast canyon containing two bases; however, because the genre is real-time strategy rather than first-person shooter, the bases are far more functional than the hollowed-out structures from the original. Between the opposing bases lies a huge, open field with hills, cliffs, and ditches, and rock walls all around. There is some vegetation, but the terrain is mostly desert-like.
Blood Gulch is likely set on the interior of Trove, the shield world encountered during the Halo Wars campaign. This would place Blood Gulch in a unique position as the only shield world-set map to feature Insurrectionists as the neutral enemy type, rather than Sentinels and Flood.

Strategies
Overview
To win, it is recommended to capture Rebel Bases and build expansions; there are two of them: one near your base which is North-West and one on the far right is a hill with Rebel soldiers and snipers. You can use the teleporters to get there quicker. Bring a handful of troops to the hill because the snipers are very powerful.
Layout
Like its Halo: Combat Evolved predecessor, Blood Gulch takes the form of a desert box canyon, with cliff paths on either side. At either end of the canyon lies one of two player starting bases, with two neutral rebel faction bases towards the middle of the map. The map has a symmetrical placement of neutral objectives, with the cliff to the right of each base (from the base's perspective) containing a supply elevator and two sniper towers, while the left contains a reactor and a single sniper tower. These neutral buildings are guarded by rebel snipers and infantry.

When you kill the Rebels, take that position. Leave a group behind and move a powerful group (with Tanks and Aircrafts if you set up a base for them) to the enemy's base. Destroy it and scout the remainder of the map for any enemies left (do not take the group you left at the once rebel base).
Behind each base is a one-way teleporter, with an exit point in the middle of the map near the reactor spawn.

The bonus reactors are valuable on this map. Nearby is a supply elevator with sniper towers, making it a free energy upgrade and extra supply boost, beware the Rebel troops defending these structures.
Strategies
*It is recommended to capture new base locations and bonus buildings. The player can use the teleporters to reach the reactors quickly. Since both structures are defended by rebel snipers units, the player should attack with anti-infantry or vehicle units.

Production notes
As seen in an OXM magazine article, and on a few websites, editors from OXM visited Ensemble Studios, and were able to play on a multiplayer map called "Blood Gulch".
Blood Gulch was created due to a desire to create a map existing Halo players would be familiar with. Blood Gulch was chosen due to the map's open spaces and variety added by the cliffs on either side. To keep the canyon layout intact with Halo Wars production methods, the developers had to use a larger base terrain size, then restrict the viewing area to a rectangle.

In the magazine, it states that it is clear the map is based off of the Halo: Combat Evolved map Blood Gulch. With the release of Halo Wars, this map is confirmed as being called Blood Gulch.
Blood Gulch was one of the first Skirmish maps revealed to the public. Editors from Official Xbox Magazine visited Ensemble Studios, and were able to play on the map.

Trivia
During matches on Blood Gulch, the Halo Wars OST track Bad Here Day plays as the level's ambient music.
*This map has teleporters, as did the original version from Halo: CE and Coagulation in Halo 2.
*Although a true remake isn't really feasible with the change of genres, it is still similar to Blood Gulch from Halo: CE because of the terrain, the overall shape, the fact that it is in a canyon, and that the bases are opposite each other.
*Although this map has Rebels as the Neutral faction, the music that plays is the same music on maps with the Forerunners as the Neutral faction.

A fast and brutal fight awaits in Blood Gulch. Teleporters allow for surprise attacks, while bonus Reactors offer opportunities for the aggressive.

Blood Gulch is a Halo Wars multiplayer map, based off the iconic Halo: Combat Evolved level of the same name.[1]

Universe and lore[edit]

Blood Gulch is likely set on the interior of Trove, the shield world encountered during the Halo Wars campaign. This would place Blood Gulch in a unique position as the only shield world-set map to feature Insurrectionists as the neutral enemy type, rather than Sentinels and Flood.

Overview[edit]

Layout[edit]

Like its Halo: Combat Evolved predecessor, Blood Gulch takes the form of a desert box canyon, with cliff paths on either side. At either end of the canyon lies one of two player starting bases, with two neutral rebel faction bases towards the middle of the map. The map has a symmetrical placement of neutral objectives, with the cliff to the right of each base (from the base's perspective) containing a supply elevator and two sniper towers, while the left contains a reactor and a single sniper tower. These neutral buildings are guarded by rebel snipers and infantry.

Behind each base is a one-way teleporter, with an exit point in the middle of the map near the reactor spawn.

Strategies[edit]

 • It is recommended to capture new base locations and bonus buildings. The player can use the teleporters to reach the reactors quickly. Since both structures are defended by rebel snipers units, the player should attack with anti-infantry or vehicle units.
 • Capturing the reactors can be a vital way to quickly gain technology advantage over your opponent.[2]
 • Brute infantry can be advantageous in scaling the cliffs containing the Reactor and Supply Pad buildings.[2]
 • Taking the rebel base closer to the opponent's starting base can serve as both a surprise attack and a means to slow down the opponent's expansion. Leave a small army and setting up turrets after setting up a base there before moving on to other regions of the map.[1]

Production notes[edit]

Blood Gulch was created due to a desire to create a map existing Halo players would be familiar with. Blood Gulch was chosen due to the map's open spaces and variety added by the cliffs on either side. To keep the canyon layout intact with Halo Wars production methods, the developers had to use a larger base terrain size, then restrict the viewing area to a rectangle.[1]

Blood Gulch was one of the first Skirmish maps revealed to the public. Editors from Official Xbox Magazine visited Ensemble Studios, and were able to play on the map.[3]

During matches on Blood Gulch, the Halo Wars OST track Bad Here Day plays as the level's ambient music.
