- "Right hand of Endurance-of-Will, the Didact's loyal lieutenant. Advanced Boltshot that fires a swarm of tracking bolts with each press of the trigger."
- — In-game description[4]
The Open Hand is a special variant of the Z-110 Directed Energy Pistol/Exotic, which appears in Halo 5: Guardians as a Rare REQ variant of the Boltshot. Its chassis is identical to that of the normal Boltshot, albeit with orange and turquoise stripes flowing through the weapon's main housing, particularly at the top and bottom areas.[5]
Background
The Open Hand is a named variant of the Z-110 DEP/E, which is depicted with upgraded rounds that take the form of dual red bolts that exhibit strong tracking behavior. It is noted for being the right hand of Endurance-of-Will, a Promethean Knight who served as the Ur-Didact's loyal lieutenant.[4][1] She carried it, alongside the Closed Fist on her left hand, in the final years prior to the firing of the Halo Array.[1]
In October 2558, Fireteam Osiris encountered a copy of the Open Hand on a snow-capped ledge in an area on Kamchatka that they passed through on their quest to retrieve Catherine Halsey from Jul 'Mdama.[6] Both the Closed Fist and Open Hand were later integrated into War Games simulations for use by Spartan-IVs aboard the UNSC Infinity via a method that remains a closely guarded secret among Office of Naval Intelligence personnel.[5][1]
Gameplay
Halo 5: Guardians
The Open Hand is a special weapon that can be found in the campaign mission Osiris.
Appearing as a Rare Level 3 REQ worth 100 REQ Points when sold, the Open Hand performs identically to a normal Boltshot except that it fires two red bolts per round for a total of 48 bolts per magazine and can have up to 120 total rounds (40 shots). These bolts exhibit strong tracking behavior and increased damage, requiring seven pairs of Open Hand bolts to kill a Spartan. These improvements make the Open Hand a powerful weapon, both in offensive and suppressive roles, as it can take down riders of Warthogs, Ghosts, or Mongooses more easily due to the bolts curving around the vehicle to reach the riders and is a decent competitor to loadout weapons like the Battle Rifle and DMR. In addition, its increased damage output can also spell trouble for Promethean Soldiers, making this weapon highly effective on Heroic or Legendary.
However, compared to the normal Boltshot, the Open Hand has a slightly lower rate of fire to partially mitigate the effects of its improvements. In addition, Spartans can still use thruster evades to avoid the Boltshot's tracking rounds, regardless of the variant used.
Changes from the Z-110 Directed Energy Pistol/Exotic
- Fires swarms of dual red bolts with each press of the trigger.
- Fired bolts exhibit strong tracking behavior.
- Increased damage, killing a Spartan in 7 bolts (2+1/3 bursts).
- Slightly lower rate of fire.
- Maximum reserve ammunition capacity increased from 72 to 96.
- Projectile speed is fixed at 68.05 m/s, regardless of whether or not the bolts are tracking targets.
- Main light on the weapon does not turn off when the weapon is used with Smart-Link.
