"Gonna take a lot more than this to kill me, Commander."
— Hoya to Sarah Palmer after sustaining minor injuries from a Promethean Knight.[1]

Carlo Hoya (service number 90302-89202-CH)[2] is a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier who serves on Fireteam Majestic, part of the UNSC Infinity's Spartan contingent during the Second Battle of Requiem in early 2558.[2]

Biography

Early life

Born on Asmara, he and his family fled to Circumstance as refugees. Upon turning the eligible age he joined the UNSC Marine Corps. He eventually became an ODST and served in several battles over his Marine career. During the Battle of New Jerusalem in 2552, Hoya was taken prisoner by the Covenant. However, he was able to escape and in the process managed to save a dozen Naval officers.[2]

Hoya later joined the SPARTAN-IV program, and was assigned to Fireteam Majestic under squad leader Paul DeMarco. Majestic, with the exception of Gabriel Thorne was assigned to a mission in Rio de Janeiro. He and Majestic stopped a Sangheili from detonating a HAVOK nuke.

Second Battle of Requiem

In 2558 Majestic was all assigned to the UNSC Infinity under the command of Sarah Palmer. The UNSC Infinity then began its second tour of Requiem.[3] At some point on their stay on Infinity, Hoya helped Thorne search for Halsey's presence on the ship. Hoya found a letter from Admiral Margaret Parangosky to Dr. Halsey (whose name was redacted on the document) and gave it to Thorne, who kept it in his UNSC Infinity Briefing Packet.[4]

Majestic and Fireteam Crimson were sent north of the UNSC's operational area to down Forerunner power generators. As they had similar objectives, Palmer turned the operation into a challenge between Majestic and Crimson. Despite having their long-range communications downed, the teams restored them and continued with the challenge. Though pulling ahead, Majestic was beat by Crimson, despite Crimson actually facing firmer resistance than Fireteam Majestic.[5]

Later on Requiem's surface, Fireteam Majestic had to face a swarm of Promethean Crawlers, translocating on the planets surface. Soon Promethean Knights began to attack, injuring Majestic member Anthony Madsen. Enraged, Hoya broke cover to take on the Knight, and got injured. He was evacuated and brought in a stretcher back aboard the UNSC Infinity where he was met by Palmer. Hoya informed her that he would return to the field.[6]

True to his word, Hoya joined the rest of Majestic on retrieving the artifact known as the "Didact's Gift" from Galileo Base after most of the forces had been cleared out by Crimson. Retrieving the gift, they got pinned down by Banshees and Phantoms. However, Thorne managed to hijack a Banshee and destroy a Phantom, allowing Majestic to bring the gift back to the Infinity.[7]

Later, Hoya and the others from Majestic rescued Thorne and Dr. Glassman from Gek 'Lhar, and later on, attempted to rescue Dr. Halsey from Jul 'Mdama. Later, he, along with the rest of Majestic and Commander Palmer, located and deactivated one of the artifacts binding Infinity to Requiem. With the other artifact having been deactivated by Crimson, Infinity was able to escape Requiem before the shield world was destroyed.

Freighter rescue

On March 11, six days after DeMarco's death on Ealen IV, Infinty arrived in the Artesia-702 system having received a distress signal from the damaged freighter Pilgrims Pride. When an ambush was sprung, Fireteam Majestic was deployed along Fireteams Colossus and Fenrir to repel attack and prevent the freighter from self-destructing on the Infinity. Leading the fireteams, Thorne ordered teams Colossus and Fenrir to secure the ship while Majestic made their way to the core. As the Spartans advance through the freighter, they encountered automated defense turrets but Madsen was able to swiftly destroy them with his rifle. With the enemy going into retreat, the freighter was tugged out into space, where Grant ejected the ship's core before it exploded. The Spartans survived the detonation and requested pickup.[8]

Rescuing the Spirit of Fire

Main article: Ambush at Oth Lodon

Following the attack, Infinity learned that the assault crafts from the freighter belonged to the long-lost UNSC Spirit of Fire. Roland discovered that the freighter was launched near Oth Lodon, a gas giant located deep in Jiralhanae space. With the Spirit's possible location found, Lord Hood authorized Commander Palmer to conduct a search and rescue mission. Equipped with OF92 Booster Frames, Fireteam Majestic and Palmer scouted the planet's system. Exploring the system's asteroid field, the Spartans came across not the Spirit of Fire but instead a Covenant station under control by New Colonial Alliance insurgents.[9]

After the station fired upon Infinity with an energy projector and disabled the ship, Commander Palmer led Majestic on a mission to take control of the station. After evading oncoming missiles, the Spartans quickly boarded the station and secured the bridge, ordering everyone to freeze. Clayton told his crew not to listen and asked the Spartans if they knew who he was. Madsen responded saying he knew who he was and knocked Clayton down for being responsible for DeMarco's death. The Spartans then turned their attention to Vata 'Gajat, who was preparing to assault the crippled Infinity. With the station's cannon back online, they fired on 'Gajat's flagship, destroying it and saving the Infinity.[10]

Ven III

On May 9, 2558, Naiya Ray and Thorne were assigned, separately from the rest of Majestic, on a secret mission to capture a Sangheili in possession of a mysterious bioweapon on Ven III. After communications with both Spartans were lost,[11] Captain Lasky ordered Infinity to head toward Ven III while Commander Palmer prepared the rest of Fireteam Majestic for insertion on the planet. Palmer assumed command of Majestic on the mission in the absence of Thorne. Upon arriving at the pirates' base, Majestic and Palmer took out several Kig-Yar pirates. After receiving notification of Thorne's location by Ray, Palmer was going to redirect Majestic to Ray to help her retrieve the bioweapon but Ray shut off her locater to force them to rescue Thorne instead. Majestic eventually found Thorne and returned him to the Infinity.[12]

Aktis IV

During the battle of Aktis IV, become separated from the rest of Majestic squad after Jul's forces attacked them. In the jungle Hoya was, unknowingly, facing 'Nyon's forces. He was attacked by a Zealot and was nearly killed but a Promethean Knight kicked the Zealot, saving Hoya in the process. Hoya fell off a cliff and spoted a Phantom with Dr. Halsey inside. Hoya then contacted Ray about his discovery. Ray then informed Palmer about Hoya spotting Dr. Halsey being escorted by Jul's forces. [13]

Personality and traits

While generally jovial and laid-back among his Spartan compatriots, Hoya has a notably short temper and a tendency for brash and reckless actions during combat. This was demonstrated during the Requiem campaign when he singlehandedly charged a group of Prometheans after Madsen was injured. However, his brazen attitude has also gained Hoya some of his more noted accomplishments, something that was recognized in his recruitment into the SPARTAN-IV program.[2]

Equipment

Hoya wears the Operator variant of the MJOLNIR GEN2 armor, and carries an M45D shotgun.

Production note

Hoya is voiced by Issac Singleton.
