Stefan Vídalín was a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier of the United Nations Space Command. He served in the UNSC as part of the complement of UNSC Victory of Samothrace during the Created uprising of 2559, though was ultimately killed during the Battle of Boundary on December 15 of that year. His death came at the hands of another Spartan, Merrick, who was a double agent working for the Order of Restoration.[1]
Biography[edit]
Vídalín, alongside his fellow Spartan David McEndon, was one of the first SPARTAN-IVs to graduate from the Avery J. Johnson Academy of Military Science on Nysa, following the academy's conversion from an ONI Section Three base to a Spartan training facility. The two were assigned as part of the hundreds-strong Spartan complement aboard UNSC Victory of Samothrace shortly after the ship finished construction. The two continued to serve aboard the superheavy cruiser well into the Created uprising, and were present aboard the ship during its mission to Rossbach's World on November 5, 2559. The two were typically posted as the personal escort for the ship's captain Abigail Cole, though in her absence while off-ship, they instead followed the ship's executive officer Commander Emanuel Njuguna. After Cole returned from the mission, they once again reported to her, shadowing her until she reached the ship's briefing room to update admirals Serin Osman and Terrence Hood on the state of the galaxy.[2]
Spartan Vídalín remained aboard Victory of Samothrace over the next few weeks, before being chosen to deploy to the ground on November 21 as part of a larger operation on Venezia.[3] He joined Spartans McEndon and Merrick, with the three paired with a SPARTAN-II unit, Gray Team, alongside three warriors from the Swords of Sanghelios. While Gray Team operated as a singular unit with Tul 'Juran, the SPARTAN-IVs were tasked to work with Vul 'Soran and Stolt. The specific compositions of the non-Gray Team units remain unknown, so where Vídalín deployed in the engagement is unclear. The non-Gray teams were tasked with deploying to the outer perimeter of the township of Staithe while Gray and Tul entered the town itself; the goal of the mission was to capture a High Lord of the Order of Restoration, Dovo Nesto. Given Staithe's extensive anti-air defences, the ground teams could expect no close air support, meaning that the two teams on the perimeter were tasked with coordinating to ensure that Dovo Nesto could not escape the town. Unfortunately for the UNSC-Swords deployment, by the time they arrived in Staithe the High Lord was in the process of being extracted by Severan and the Banished.[4] The ground forces subsequently returned to Victory of Samothrace aboard their respective dropships while the cruiser and the Swords Kerel-pattern assault carrier Shadow of Intent proceeded to engage Severan's fleet in orbit.[5]
Vídalín remained aboard Victory of Samothrace after the cruiser retreated from Venezia back to Earth, and was once again deployed as part of a similar ground team at Boundary on December 15. This time, in addition to all of the prior personnel from the Venezia mission, the group were bolstered by an additional squad of twelve Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. While on Boundary, the team's mission was to capture, or if necessary assassinate, Dovo Nesto, as to prevent him from gaining control of the Lithos buried under Tyrrhen. Vídalín was placed in team Zulu Red with the other Spartans and Swords personnel, with the ODSTs comprising Zulu Blue. Upon landing, Zulu Red made their way into the city centre via a network of outflow tunnels under the settlement.[3] While travelling through the tunnels, the group encountered a group of Banished Jiralhanae Stalkers. Not wanting to break their stealth, Jai-006 ordered the group split up, with the SPARTAN-IVs alongside 'Soran and Stolt headed to an irrigation plant while Gray Team and 'Juran headed the opposite direction to distract the Stalkers. The team were ultimately forced to leave the irrigation plant due to enemy activity, and instead holed up on the third floor of a schoolhouse overlooking the Banished dig site, where they were later joined by Gray and 'Juran.[6]
Spartans Vídalín, McEndon, and Merrick set up observation equipment in the windows of the schoolhouse and began to observe the dig site, alongside a confrontation between War Chief Severan, Dovo Nesto, and Sali 'Nyon after the arrival of the latter's fleet. After confirming their findings, the group once again moved to find a better point to assassinate Nesto and gain access to the Lithos. However, when the time came for the killing shots to be fired, two members of the group - Vul 'Soran and Spartan Merrick - betrayed the others and disrupted the assassination. Merrick fired a burst of assault rifle rounds at Vídalín and Stolt before being killed by Stolt and Michael-120. Vídalín returned fire with a burst from his battle rifle, but was ultimately killed. McEndon moved his body into cover,[1] and before leaving, said a parting word to his dead friend.[7] The town was later destroyed when Victory of Samothrace conducted an orbital bombardment of the Lithos, firing its Magnetic Accelerator Cannon at the site to ensure its destruction and presumably destroying Vídalín's body.
Equipment[edit]
During the mission to Boundary, Vídalín used a battle rifle.[1] While operating on Venezia, Tul 'Juran noted that she could not tell the difference between Vídalín, his fellow SPARTAN-IVs, or the SPARTAN-IIs of Gray Team - commenting that they all looked "foolishly overdressed" in their MJOLNIR Powered Assault Armor.[4]
