Merrick was a SPARTAN-IV supersoldier who served in the United Nations Space Command's Spartan Operations division. In 2559 he was assigned as part of the Spartan complement aboard UNSC Victory of Samothrace during its mission to Boundary. Unbeknownst to the UNSC, Merrick was secretly aligned with the Order of Restoration, leading to his death on Boundary on December 14, 2559.[1]

Biography[edit]

Merrick was one of the Spartans selected from Victory of Samothrace to join a groundside excursion to Boundary in search of the Lithos on December 14, 2559. Himself, alongside fellow SPARTAN-IVs David McEndon and Stefan Vídalín, were deployed into the township of Tyrrhen with twelve Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, SPARTAN-II Gray Team, Vul 'Soran, Tul 'Juran, and Stolt. During the insertion flight aboard U81 Condor Zulu Seven Nine, Merrick questioned the presence of the ODSTs and Stolt on the mission, believing that they would slow the Spartans and Sangheili teammembers down - and leading to his rebuttal by Gray Team. Once landed on Boundary, the Spartans (including Merrick) and Sangheili were designated as team Zulu Red, while the ODSTs formed Zulu Blue - with Jai-006 threatening to assign Merrick to Zulu Blue if he continued to run his mouth.[2]

Zulu Red proceeded into Tyrrhen with the intent of assassinating Dovo Nesto, High Lord of the Order of Restoration, splitting up to insert into the Banished-occupied settlement easier. The three SPARTAN-IVs initially brought up the rear of the team, though after entering Tyrrhen's sewers were instructed by Jai to take blademaster 'Soran and Stolt and head to an irrigation plant; Gray Team and Tul 'Juran continued through the sewers, with the two groups intending to meet up closer to the Lithos.[3] Merrick and his team proceeded to an abandoned school close to the excavation site and were eventually rejoined by Gray and 'Juran. While the team set up to fire killing shots on Severan, Sali 'Nyon, and Dovo Nesto, Merrick revealed his true allegiance to the Order of Restoration and instead turned traitor - firing upon Vídalín and Stolt and killing Vídalín before in turn being engaged by Stolt and Michael-120. This attack was timed with Vul 'Soran's betrayal of the team, attacking Tul 'Juran and causing her to miss her sniper shot on Nesto. Merrick was killed by Stolt and Michael-120.[1]

Equipment[edit]

As a SPARTAN-IV, Merrick used GEN3 MJOLNIR power armor. During his deployment to Boundary, he wielded an assault rifle.[1]

Personality and traits[edit]

Merrick held some disdain for working alongside non-augmented human personnel like ODSTs, feeling that they held him back in missions. These feelings caused some tension between himself and the ODSTs he worked alongside on Boundary, and led to a rebuke by Adriana-111 noting the ODSTs' necessity to the upcoming mission. He also questioned the presence of Stolt, an Unggoy Ranger, on the mission, which caused Jai-006 to step in and ask Merrick to keep his feelings to himself.[2]
