This is just a small example of what you can do as a Halo 2 cartographer!

Example is a custom-made map included in Halo 2 for Windows Vista's built-in map editor as an example of what players can do when making their own maps. It isn't technically an actual map, but it is included in the game's map editor files by default. It can be acquired by installing the Halo 2 Vista Map Editor.

Overview

Layout

Example consists of a single large room of Forerunner construction, divided into two halves by a lower dividing wall. The map has two floors, with each side consisting of a walkway on the upper floor overlooking the lower areas, which are connected by a tunnel in the middle of the map. Each base has a machine gun turret, and the map overall is littered with dozens of fusion cores.

The map is notable for containing several weapons not typically found in Halo 2 multiplayer by default, being the only map to spawn the Fuel Rod Gun by default. Of particular note, the map features a weapon previously cut from Halo 2's original release - the Suppressed SMG.

This map features a weapon new to gameplay, but has already been in Halo: First Strike, Halo Graphic Novel and The Art of Halo: the M7S SMG. The M7S is a standard M7 SMG with a suppressor attached to the barrel, making it less noisy and reducing muzzle flash. It also has a laser sight.

Example is one the smallest maps in any Halo game. The map is so small that it barely fits two players, making it a map of "spawn killing" chaos when it is played with an excessive number of players.

Production notes

While Example was shipped with Halo 2 Vista, several similar maps were intended to ship alongside it but didn't make the cut, with one such map even including the Suppressed SMG. Two of the three maps were later released by Hired Gun developer Dennis Powers for free download on halomaps.org.[1][2]
