New Carthage Forerunner Way Station
From Halopedia, the Halo wiki
The New Carthage Forerunner Way Station was a Forerunner way station on the planet New Carthage.
Design[edit]
The way station was situated in a massive subterranean cavern and was composed of a sleek gray alloy platform covering at least three acres, with glowing blue accents and symbols. The platform was anchored in place with large superstructures that reach up to pierce the bedrock above. Some resembled power stations and conduit casings. A pair of light bridges reached out from the main platform to meet a smaller platform with a terminal on the other side of the chamber, forming a semicircle. Hannibal Weapon Systems set up portable workstations, conference rooms, and labs along the main platform.[1]
The Pori Meteor was possibly created by the Forerunners as some kind of beacon or power station connected to the subterranean way station.[2]
The way station was shielded from detection by sensors, instead appearing only as a void, an absence of readings three kilometers underground, suggesting the use of a dazzler.[2]
After Jack Hannibal and Hannibal Weapon Systems took over the way station, it was made accessible for those with high security clearance through a tightly secured elevator on sublevel three of Hannibal HQ. Four smart AIs were employed for security purposes.[1]
History[edit]
At some point, the Librarian placed the third piece of her coordinate key into the terminal of the way station.[1]
In 2474, the Hannibal family settled on thirty acres that would become the city of Pilvros. By 2505, Hannibal HQ was built directly over the way station. The Hannibal family also discovered the Pori Meteor and evidently had recognized its uniqueness as they built Hannibal HQ over it as well. Research conducted on the meteor or the structure below resulted in humanity's first small-scale quantum photonic amplifier for SATCOM relays which revolutionized the speed and integrity of interplanetary communications, catapulting Jack Hannibal into fame and a lucrative new company, Hannibal Weapon Systems.[3] Hannibal would continue research on the meteor,[2] but it was ultimately made the centerpiece of Hannibal HQ's main atrium by 2558.[3]
When 343 Guilty Spark placed the first piece of the coordinate key into the Cartographer on Installation 07 and Rion Forge added her touch as a Reclaimer, it gave them the second piece and a star map pointed to the way station. Rion was suddenly pulled through a slipspace portal[4] and Spark speculated that it was to their next destination.[5] Upon discovering where the Forerunner facility was stationed, the Ace of Spades crew realized that Hannibal had most likely found it and used the technology that Hannibal was able to reverse-engineer to build his empire.[3]
Ram Chalva, accompanied by a fragment of Spark, infiltrated Hannibal HQ, allowing Spark to get into its systems.[2] While Lessa and Niko created a tremor to evacuate Hannibal HQ, Ram used an active camouflage unit to sneak through the building. Spark worked to distract the security and administrative AIs and make it into the way station's systems before being discovered where he would have the technological advantage to shut down all security features and obstacles for an escape. The evacuation alert also caused all of the workers in the way station to flee. However, there was no sign that Rion had been transported to the way station by the slipspace portal. As Spark fought off the security AIs, Ram inserted the key and accessed the terminal as a Reclaimer, causing it to release the third part of the coordinate key. Ram escaped and when the pieces of the coordinate key were put together, it pointed to Erebus VII.[6][1]
