UNSC Atlas was an Epoch-class heavy carrier[1] in service with the UNSC Navy prior to the beginning of the Human-Covenant War in 2525.

Service history[edit]

Lambda Serpentis[edit]

On April 2525, the vessel went on patrol in the Lambda Serpentis system. Unknown to most of the crew, Spartan-IIs were onboard the Atlas to recover from their augmentations in the microgravity conditions and bury their dead.[4]

Common throughout most ships in the fleet, the Atlas had a detachment of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers from the 105th division.[5] A situation was orchestrated aboard the ship to test a Spartan against then Second Lieutenant Antonio Silva's marines.[6] One morning, in the ship's gymnasium, an argument between a young John-117 and four marines was caused by John accidentally almost crushing a Helljumper's foot with weights. It left two of the ODSTs dead and the other two severely wounded. It damaged the relationship and triggered off the intense rivalry between Spartans and the Helljumpers for nearly three decades.[7]

Trivia[edit]

  • The ship is named after the titan Atlas in Greek mythology, who held the sky on his back as punishment for rebelling against the gods.
  • Atlas' appearance changes between the comic and animated adaptations of The Fall of Reach. The original design vaguely resembles the Phoenix-class colony ship. In contrast, the version seen in the animated series resembles the Epoch-class heavy carrier, albeit with several elements rearranged (such as the thrusters being inverted) or absent (such as the bridge section). According to 343 Industries writer Jeff Easterling, the ship is canonically an Epoch-class carrier, with her divergent appearances in visual media due to artistic license.[1]
