- "Interesting… it seems there's very little in the database about this Covenant group, but they're known as the Sacristan Order. Deadly, zealous, and quite the fashion upgrade from standard Covenant military."
- — Cortana[2]
The Sacristan Order are a zealous order of the Covenant, founded in the early years of the empire shortly after its founding. They are devoted to enforcing orthodoxy of the Covenant religion and the foundational tenets of the Writ of Union.[3] They were originally formed by the San'Shyuum Dovo Nesto in conjunction with Sangheili leaders around the 9th century BCE, with Nesto continuing to shepherd the organisation since then. As such, they are closely associated with his Order of Restoration.[1]
During the Human-Covenant War they were rarely encountered by humanity.[2] In 2551 they worked alongside the Minister of Harmony from the research ship Triumph of Tolerance, where they were engaged by the UNSC, leading to the loss of the ship and its crew.[4]
History[edit]
Origins[edit]
The Sacristan Order was founded in the first years of the Covenant empire, following the signing of the Writ of Union.[3] The order was founded by a San'Shyuum, Dovo Nesto, who personally worked the Sangheili leader Batar 'Soranu to establish it.[1] 'Soranu served as one of the order's first warriors,[1] and over time they went on to recruit the most most devout clerics, scholars and temple guardians to the orthodoxy of the empire's religion and foundational tenets.[3][1] Some of these early warriors were derived from the ancient Sangheili arpaktiko order,[3] and wore distinctive ivory-bronze armor.[1]
One of the earliest tasks given to the Sacristans was rooting out rebellious Sangheili who were resentful to the Covenant's formation and sought to undermine it. The Sacristan Order's duties expanded over the years and they became the prime enforcers of orthodox doctrine in the Covenant religion.[3]
Modern era[edit]
During the Human-Covenant War, the Sacristans were an instrument of the Covenant rarely-recorded by humanity.[2] In 2551 they worked alongside the Minister of Harmony to operate the research ship Triumph of Tolerance. In July of that year, they were involved in the minister's genetic experimentation with Forerunner gene-forges in orbit of the vitrified human colony of Promise.[5] The Sacristan crew of the ship were engaged by Libra Team and multiple human POWs during a battle aboard the ship, which concluded with the ship's destruction thanks to the destroyer UNSC Burden of Proof. The Minister of Harmony was able to escape Triumph prior to its destruction.[4]
By 2559, the original founder of the Sacristans, Dovo Nesto—who had managed to sustain himself for millennia thanks to the same gene-forge technology used by Harmony—remained involved with them. He used the tale of their founding to persuade Batar 'Soranu's descendant, blademaster Vul 'Soran, to join the Order of Restoration.[1]
Personnel[edit]
Ranks and roles[edit]
The Sacristan Order, unlike the Zealots or the Obedientiaries, does not have traditional military ranks but instead its primarily formed by different roles suited to each member and species. To be elevated into a higher role, each member must pass trials of faith to prove themselves worthy.[3]
