Admiral Roland Freemont (service number 00745-16778-HS) was a flag officer in the UNSC Navy during the Human-Covenant War. In the later stages of the war he served as the commanding officer for CENTCOM Region One and the principle commander for the defence of the Epsilon Eridani system during the Fall of Reach.[1]

Biography[edit]

Fall of Reach[edit]

Main article: Fall of Reach

Admiral Freemont was the UNSC commander during the Fall of Reach on August 30, 2552. At 0519 he issued UNSC Alpha Priority Transmission 04592Z-83 to all vessels in the Epsilon Eridani system in response to a massive incursion of 314 Covenant starships entering the system. The transmission ordered an immediate recall of all vessels to Reach to aid in the planet's defence, alongside the commencement of the Cole Protocol for all ships and stations in the system.[1]

In the ensuing space battle Admiral Freemont led the Epsilon Eridani Fleet, the largest UNSC fleet outside of Sol, consisting of more than 150 UNSC ships and 20 Erőd-class orbital weapon platforms. Freemont copied tactics used by Vice Admiral Michael Stanforth in the battle of Sigma Octanus IV the previous month and organised his ship to fire in staggered salvos and used refit stations as sacrificial shields.[1]

He was presumably killed in action during the fighting alongside other senior officers such as Vice Admiral Michael Stanforth and the staff at FLEETCOM HQ. By 0500 hours, Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb became the highest-ranking officer of all forces still operating in the Reach Defense Coordination Zone.[2]

Production notes[edit]

In the original 2001 release of Halo: The Fall of Reach, Admiral Freemont's message in Chapter 32 is addressed to all ships in the Reach, Tantalus, and Jericho systems. This was changed in the 2011 Tor Books reprint (and all subsequent releases) of the novel to simply read Epsilon Eridani system.
