Anwar Shafiq was a commissioned officer serving the UNSC Navy as a Lieutenant aboard the UNSC Saturn.
Biography[edit]
Shafiq originally served aboard the UNSC Irish Goodbye, but would be transferred to the Saturn after he had requested it. His previous executive officer had seen Shafiq had aspired to take command of his own, and Shafiq hoped to take control of the Saturn after its current captain, Pedro Alvarez, was soon to retire.[1]
Having been transferred to the Saturn not long before it had been deployed to oversee a mining operation by Imbrium Machine Complex and the BXR Mining Corporation on LV-31,[1] Shafiq would meet with Alvarez in the ready room, who showed him about the painting Saturn Devouring His Son and gave a rehearsed speech about the painting's origins — something he would do with all new officers to the ship to gain an understanding of their tactical acumen and way of thinking. However, they would be interrupted by an alert from the bridge as the mining crew at Site 22 sent out a distress call.[2]
After learning that the Flood had been unintentionally released, Alvarez would order the ship's Hellbringer compliment and Fireteam Leviathan to eliminate the Flood against the recommendation of the the Ship's Smart AI, Lycaon, to enact Emergency Contact Protocol Upsilon. When their containment efforts failed, with one of the Spartans of Fireteam Levithan becoming infected, Alvarez enacted CORRUPTER and UPSILON protocols, using the Saturn's arsenal of Shiva-class nuclear missles.[2]
The next day, October 5, Shafiq would deliver a statistical analysis of what happened at Site 22 to Alvarez, which included their lost forces. Shafiq would also tell him about the assets that had been deployed Site 22, what had returned to the Saturn and what had not, where he revealed that one of the Saturn's Slipspace-capable Condors had been unaccounted for. After which, Alvarez ordered Shafiq to send all footage of the incident to him to personally review, and told him that no one else on the ship must know about the Condor until he knew for certain.[1]
After four days of silence, Alvarez would instruct Shafiq to gather 193 of the ship's remaining crew, including Marines, security personnel and some officers, in the hanger bay for a special address. In the address, after briefly taking a moment to honor those lost in the outbreak, he would tell the assembled crew that he had received orders from FLEETCOMM, and that they were to leave the Marcey system with all non-essential staff to be put into cryosleep. As the crew began questioning Alvarez's story, Shafiq studied the assignments and logistics on his TACPAD, finding that all senior officers were to be put in cryo and three of the maintenance crew included three of the members of Fireteam Leviathan that had been killed at Site 22. Alvarez dismissed it a simple glitch and asked Shafiq to report to the ready room to continue their conversation on Saturn Devouring His Son. Feeling everyone in the hanger looking at him, Shafiq firmly refused.[1]
As tensions continued to rise, one of the crew asked what Alvarez meant when stated "a contagion had escaped [them]". Shafiq seized the moment, revealing to them that Alvarez had attempt to cover up that one of their Condors had been unaccounted for with the possibility that some Flood had escaped LV-31. This convinced the crew to relieve Alvarez of command, put him in a cryopod and send him to Earth to stand trial for his crimes. As Alvarez cried mutiny, Shafiq apologized and informed him that would be removed for violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice by attempting desertion. But before he could finish, Alvarez would open the hanger bay's rear hatch. Shafiq tried to climb a ladder on the side of the hanger wall to escape, but would ultimately join the rest of the 193 crew sucked into space.[1]
