Staff Sergeant Aleta Vachon is a non-commissioned officer serving in the UNSC Marine Corps. She fought in the Human-Covenant War as a part of the "Hungry Buzzards", a battalion of Force Recon troops attached to the 19th Marine Division. The unit was mostly destroyed in the battle of Legopo, leaving Aleta the seniormost officer of the unit's surviving troops.[1]

Biography[edit]

During the later years of the Human-Covenant War, Staff Sergeant Vachon fought as part of the Hungry Buzzards, attached to the 19th Marine Division. She served as part of this unit in the battle of Legopo, a bloody engagement which saw most of her unit cut down to fend off a legion of Jiralhanae shock troops. While the defence was successful, only eight of the marines lived to tell the tale, using a captured Spirit dropship.[1]

In July 2551 the Hungry Buzzards were stationed at Fairchild Field, Reach, where they were assigned to work under Colonel James Ackerson as part of the HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL program. The marines were used to operate prototype Mark I (H) exoskeletons in a series of test exercises against a single SPARTAN-II, John-117, clad in Mark IV MJOLNIR powered armour and experimental energy shielding. These tests were conducted over the course of a few days leading up to July 13, in which time the exoskeleton-clad Buzzards raced the Spartan in time trials and fought against him in combat exercises.[1]

At 0923 on July 13, Vachon lead her marines in an exercise against John-117, breaking the rules of the engagement to have some of her team deploy without exoskeletons up in the darkened overhead rafters of the Fast Floor, hoping to use them to distract the Spartan and lead him into an ambush. John was able to react accordingly and noticed them, leaving him vulnerable to a hidden exoskeleton-clad gunner at the point where the exercise was prematurely halted by Colonel Ackerson. All of the test subjects met Ackerson and the rest of the observation party—including Doctor Catherine Halsey and Vice Admiral Danforth Whitcomb—where they informed that they were to be redeployed on an emergency mission to board a lone Covenant spacecraft currently in orbit of the colony world Promise. Upon hearing this plan, John objected to the inclusion of the Hungry Buzzards, noting that the bulk of their exoskeletons made them ill-fitting for such a close-quarters engagement. Vachon disagreed, but the two eventually agreed to settle the matter with a simple exercise: Vachon and four of her troops would close into a corridor similar in width to those on a Covenant ship, and they would try to stop John from reaching the end.[1]

Vachon deployed her marines in the corridor in staggered positions on either side, with herself stood behind in the middle as the final obstacle that John would have to pass, to ensure that that they could not be toppled like dominoes. She anticipated that John would use a flashbang grenade to blind the marines and appropriately assigned blind fire zones, ensuring that the Spartan would be pinned down as soon as the exercise began. This went as planned, and Vachon suppressed John with her arm-mounted minigun. He was then able to fight through the marines to Vachon herself, throwing an unarmed flashbang above her to distract her while he aimed a magnum shot at her feet, disabling her and winning the exercise.[1]

John ultimately appraised Vachon and her troops and concluded that they would be unfit for a boarding action due to their inexperience in EVA combat and boarding missions. As such, he instead took the marines' captured Spirit dropship and only requested one other person to accompany him on the mission.[1]

Personality and traits[edit]

Vachon has green eyes, an aquiline nose, and close-cropped blonde hair. She is protective of her marines and their reputation, and defensive when she feels that is being called into question. She is also competitive, and during the Mark I [H] trials she was eager to try and win against John-117. Her combat experience is also vast, befitting her senior NCO rank, and as such John considered her intelligent.[1]
