Overview[edit]

Design details[edit]

Main article: Mark I ADS

The Mark I [H] exoskeleton stands as tall as a Jiralhanae.[2] Superficially, the Mark I [H] largely retains the overall design of the Mark I ADS, with one key difference being the leg design; the [H] variant utilizes a digitigrade design, incorporating an additional reverse-bending joint in the "calf" area, with far more pronounced and segmented mechanical claws for its feet. The shoulder plates also extend inwards to better protect the exoskeleton's shoulder joint. The helmet is more rounded, featuring a dome-shaped faceplate rather than a narrow visor.[3] However, the faceplate does not completely shield its operator from the effects of flashbang grenades, while a design flaw in the helmet also caused muffled acoustics for the operator.[2]

Users do not require biomechanical augmentation or neural integration to operate the Mark I [H]s; however, the exoskeleton is not vacuum-rated, and it lacks life-support systems. According to James Ackerson, the [H] variant is nearly as fast as a Jiralhanae, but John-117 considered exoskeleton too sluggish for close-quarters combat. The standard Mark I [H] is equipped with a shoulder-mounted missile launcher and two arm-mounted miniguns, though they can be replaced by a grenade launcher or M247 machine guns, respectively.[2]

Operational history[edit]

In 2551, Mark I [H]s were at the centre of a bureaucratic entanglement between Colonel James Ackerson of the UNSC Army and the UNSC Navy's SPARTAN-IIs, concerning personnel deployments for the then-upcoming Operation: METEORITE. This led to John-117 having to fight against three UNSC personnel known as the Hungry Buzzards operating the exoskeletons in order to prove the Spartans' worth. The Spartan defeated the Hungry Buzzards and demonstrated the suits' flaws.[2]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ While not explicitly confirmed, the timeframe of these suits' usage, combined with Whitcomb's involvement, indicate it is likely these suits are part of the joint HRUNTNG/YGGDRASIL effort.
