Knight Takes Bishop
Knight Takes Bishop is one of several stories in Halo: Tales from Slipspace. Written by Tyler Jeffers and drawn by Dave Crosland, it follows SPARTAN-G059, a Spartan-III from Gamma Company, on a mission to assassinate Avu Med 'Telcam.
On January 21, 2558, the stealth prowler UNSC From the Ashes nestles above the former human colony New Llanelli. After analyzing local reconnaissance intel on an enemy fortress, the vessel's attached AI, Nyx, received ONI Section Three's green light to initiate its covert operation. Down on the surface, SPARTAN-G059 proceeds to engage Covenant forces in the remains of a city to eliminate her assigned high value target: Avu Med 'Telcam, leader of the Servants of the Abiding Truth. After sneaking past Unggoy guards and eliminating two Kig-Yar scouts, the Spartan-III jumps and latches herself onto an elevating Phantom dropship, using it to reach and destroy a Shade turret atop a tower near 'Telcam's position. Leaping off of the building, SPARTAN-G059 burst through a citadel's glass ceiling, getting the drop on the Bishop and his two subordinate commanders. As his two sword wielding guards are dispatched by the Spartan, Avu Med 'Telcam takes aim at his assassin with a carbine. Avoiding 'Telcam's carbine fire, SPARTAN-G059 takes cover and she deploys a bubble shield over 'Telcam to block his rounds. Acting quick, the Spartan then slides inside the shield and manages to knock the carbine out of the Sangheili's grip. In the process, however, 'Telcam is able to seize his hand around the Spartan's neck and hurl her into a pillar. Immediately recovering from the throw, SPARTAN-G059 evades an energy sword swing and outmaneuvers 'Telcam, successfully knocking him to the ground. As 'Telcam looks to get himself up, SPARTAN-G059 aims her M6 pistol directly at his hinge-head face. Before SPARTAN-G059 pulls the trigger to execute him, Avu Med 'Telcam manages to utter a single final word: Wort. With their primary target eliminated, SPARTAN-G059 is extracted from the planet by From the Ashes. As the ship leaves, Nyx receives an incoming transmission with a new mission briefing. After confirming the mission, the prowler jumps into slipstream space.

The story's title is a reference to the game of chess; specifically the knight and bishop pieces. One of Avu Med 'Telcam's titles was "the Bishop".
