"My brother Asum has gone off into the fields, probably to cry where nobody can see him. I shall cry, but not until I kill those who killed my mother. It might not be the humans, but I shall kill them anyway because they threaten Sanghelios and support the Arbiter, and I shall kill whichever Sangheili was responsible as well because species does not make a man a true brother. And when I have done that, I shall carve my mother’s story into the saga wall of our keep, as a warrior deserves.
Yes, I can wait to shed my tears. I can wait as long as it takes
"
— Dural's thoughts after his mother's death.[1]

Dural 'Mdama, later known only as the Pale Blade, is a Sangheili warrior and prominent member of the Servants of the Abiding Truth.[2]

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

Dural 'Mdama is the eldest son of Raia and Jul 'Mdama, although he is unaware who his father is, as Sangheili custom dictates the youth are solely judged on their own abilities and not by their heritage. He and his brother Asum lived in the State of Mdama and were taught combat skills by Naxan in their home at Bekan Keep. Following his mother's death at the start of the Blooding Years, Dural swore to exact vengeance on her killers and vowed to fight humans, as they supported the Arbiter Thel 'Vadam and posed a threat to Sanghelios in his eyes.[1] Feeling responsible for his mother's death during the Siege at Kolaar, the fundamentalist leader Avu Med 'Telcam took Dural on as an apprentice, starting him off as a cadet among the Servants of the Abiding Truth.[3]

By the time of the Battle of Requiem, Dural had become a leading member of the Servants of the Abiding Truth under the name Pale Blade.[2] Several months later, on January 21, 2558, the Abiding Truth were dealt a crushing blow when Avu Med 'Telcam and two of his ranking commanders were assassinated in the Servant's headquarters on New Llanelli. Although deemed a secondary target for the Spartan-III assassin, Dural was fortunate not to be among the casualties of the attack.[4] Under his guidance, he led the Abiding Truth and soon struck back at the UNSC and its Sangheili allies, infiltrating the Forerunner shield world at the former site of Onyx and endangering the scientific community inhabiting inside.[5]

Personality & Traits[edit]

Like his father, Dural has pale skin. He wears pale colored armor, and fanatically believes in the Servants of the Abiding Truth. He despises humans and The Sword of Sanghelios for the death of his mother. Despite his scorn for the Swords of Sanghelios, he is still reluctant to kill female Sangheili, even if they are his foes, as Raia 'Mdama taught him to be chivalrous to females when she was alive.
