Information on the Frag Grenade found in Halo: Campaign Evolved can be found here.

Universe and lore[edit]

Main article: M9 fragmentation grenade

In the original Combat Evolved, the grenade featured is the M9 fragmentation grenade, manufactured by Misriah Armory and used by the United Nations Space Command.[2][3][4]

In Anniversary, the weapon's model was replaced with that of the M9 grenade featured in Halo: Reach.[5]

Campaign[edit]

The Frag Grenade is first encountered on the level The Pillar of Autumn. It is unavailable for use throughout the majority of the level until close to the end, when the player comes across a barricade stocked with grenades, and numerous enemies bunched up behind. After this it can be commonly found in all subsequent missions often at the site of UNSC ordnance caches and dead Marines. They are well-rounded options with a powerful explosion that can be used to take out groups of infantry and damage vehicles. When thrown the grenade may bounce off a surface, with the first bounce starting a short fuse that counts down to detonation. Explosions near a Frag Grenade on the ground may cause them to explode in place, leading to explosive chain reactions.

From The Truth and Reconciliation onward players will start every level with 4 Frag Grenades, except The Maw where the starting count is reduced to 2. Players with also start with Plasma Grenades on the levels 343 Guilty Spark, and The Maw in addition to their Frag Grenades. In co-op players will never respawn with grenades.

In most missions the player starts with two Frag Grenades, with a maximum inventory of four. In Anniversary, enabling the Bandanna skull grants the player infinite grenades and ammunition. The Boom skull doubles the grenades' explosion radius.

Multiplayer[edit]

Frag Grenades are standard loadout weapons in Halo multiplayer. They perform largely the same as their campaign counterparts and are common fixtures in every map and mode.

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ The "detonation timer starts" behavior is actually set to "after first bounce", but this option is bugged and acts the same as "when at rest. This oversight would be corrected in Halo 2.
