Doctor Shoff was one of the best field surgeons on the UNSC Infinity.[1]
Biography[edit]
Battle for Zeta Halo[edit]
- Main article: Battle for Zeta Halo
On December 12, 2559, Shoff was aboard the UNSC Infinity when it was ambushed by Banished forces upon arrival at Installation 07. He was amongst those who survived the landing and the next six months on the ring. Under the leadership of Commander Wes Thompson, Shoff was a part of a large group -- a mixture of military, support, science and civilian -- of survivors on the stable part of the ring who spent weeks on the move together, losing too many people to count. Eventually, in around early May, they found Lifeworker Central where the Forerunner Dazzlers protected the remaining fifty-two people from Banished detection.[2] They were able to salvage nearly all of a working med bay from a downed Mulsanne-class light frigate which was turned into a field hospital staffed by Dr. Shoff and combat medic Janina Yu. By June 6, 2560, Shoff's left arm had recently been amputated below the elbow.[1]
On June 6, John-117, Joyeuse, Fernando Esparza and Lucas Browning sought Lifeworker Central in the hopes of using the geas technology located there to remove the imprint placed in Browning's mind by the Harbinger and perhaps decode whatever was in it.[3][4] At the Master Chief's request, the ODSTs Gainey and Hightower first led the group to the field hospital where Shoff told the Spartan that he hadn't seen Blue Team, Captain Thomas Lasky or any other Spartans since evacuating the Infinity. The Chief asked Shoff to treat Browning's severe injuries from Banished torture, emphasizing the young combat medic's importance, and had Janina treat Esparza for his own injuries from Esparza's time in Escharum's hands over the pilot's objections.[1]
Browning was treated for severe malnourishment, a lacerated liver, punctured lung, bruised kidneys and broken bones, a number of which had been broken, reset and broken again. Browning was given a high-nutrient IV drip which got him to around sixty percent nourished and rehydrated and he was given smart-assist splints to allow mobility to his legs while Browning's bones and muscles healed. Shoff injected Browning with a complete series of Targeted Nanoparticle Therapy and Repair programmed to repair and facilitate healing to his internal injuries.
When the Master Chief returned, Shoff was already aware of his need to leave immediately with Browning due to approaching Banished forces. Shoff informed the Spartan that Esparza had went to round up supplies awhile before and told him about the extent of the injuries he'd treated on the two men. Despite his own reservations on the matter, Shoff admitted that it was safe to move Browning if he took it slow and careful. Shoff gave Browning a stimulant to keep him alert and adjusted the TNTRs for on-the-go repair which Joy promised to monitor. Typical of his stoic nature, Shoff showed no surprise at the AI despite her being identical to Cortana unlike everyone else encountered by the Master Chief and Joy.[5]
On June 8, Shoff was amongst the attendees at Browning's funeral alongside the Master Chief, Joy, Esparza, Thompson, Janina, Cardenas, Gainey, Hightower, four Swords of Sanghelios warriors and the surviving members of the boat crew.[6]
